3R Livestock

3R is an Angus & Hereford seedstock & commercial breeding program located in Tamworth, NSW.

The focus for 3R is simple - produce cattle with superior function in a real world production environment. This focus extends from 'paddock to plate' and strives for balanced, productive, functional beef cattle. This vision was not limited to a single breed but extended over both the Angus & Hereford breeding programs.

The 3R Angus program was founded in 2018  in the depths of the Great Drought. After extensive research and great consideration the Mayne Family at Texas Angus and the Guest Family's Clunie Range herd were targeted as foundation genetics for the 3R program. Each herd presented cattle that, in our opinion, thrived under rugged commercial conditions. They are larger, more powerful, higher revenue cattle on the most part - a type we are committed too. Over the course of 2018-19 a total on 30 top end Angus donor cows was assembled, many of whom were established elite donors. Notable cow families include the Pride, Mayflower, Undine, Dream, Princess and Toque. A highlight came in 2020 when 3R secured the purchase of the great breeding cow, Texas Pride E030, for an Australian Angus mature cow record of $60,000. 3R continues a commitment to build the Angus program on proven leading maternal lines and sires featuring the backing of deep maternal lines.

Concurrently the 3R Horned Hereford program is entirely Line One Hereford genetics originating from the USDA Line One Breeding program commenced 1934. A decision was made to build Australia's first and only pure Line One herd at 3R. In order to achieve this donor cows were purchased in Montana and we continue to hold a battery of donor cows across North America. The Line One Herefords, although previously having been used in Australia, offered a unique herd that absolutely met our breeding philosophy. Line One genetics are line bred for added consistency, they are hardy cattle that adapt environment and they are cattle designed for the Commercial Cattlemen. Today, pure Line One cattle walk our paddocks and we continue to build our herd - Australia's only pure Line One herd.

3R also maintains a strong Poll Hereford breeding program. The base of the Poll Hereford program is the Churchill Lady female line. These cows are the result of imported embryos from the USA in 2017 & 2018. The Lady family is proven by time as one of the most influential in the Poll Hereford breed and an outcross to Australian genetics. We continue to identify and import the elite genetics from across the globe for the 3R Poll Hereford including notable recent sires NJW Endure 173D & Churchill Broadway.

Appreciating the importance of data and genetic validation in the 3R breeding program, in 2021 a feedlot facility was constructed which will commence operation in 2022. This facility will produce 70-100 grainfed cattle for the domestic branded beef segment. The ability to performance test steers for meat quality, yield and performance whilst the contemporary sisters are tested in the paddock for fertility, longevity and maternal attributes provides essential robust data.

3R is operated across a number of properties surrounding the Tamworth region of  Northern NSW. In 2021 3R implanted approximately 500 embryos and joined 120 females via AI & naturally. In 2022 3R is on track to increase embryo implants to 750 and join 200 registered females.

On 14th September 2022 the 3R Bull & Heifer sale will be conducted at Goonoo Goonoo Station. On offer will be approximately 45-50 Angus Bulls and 300+ PTIC Commercial Angus Heifers. We invite visitors to 3R at any time.
