Commercial buyers chase maternal traits at Reiland online bull sale

Maternal traits and feed efficiency were on the list with buyers paying to a top of $10,000 for bulls in the Reiland Angus online sale.
Held by the Lucas family, Tumut and Gundagai, in collaboration with AuctionsPlus on Friday, October 9, the Specially Selected Bull Sale resulted in 24 bulls sold from the 26 offered for an average of $8217.
The top-price bull, Reiland Wander W137, was sired by Avalon Angus Roger R9 and out of Reiland Ester P1360, and was bought by repeat client Sam Jenkins, Tangam Pastoral, Tangambalanga, Vic.
The 17-month-old sire ranked in the top 1 per cent on gestation length at -12.2 days, top 3pc for net feed intake at -0.52, top 4pc for scrotal size at +4.3, top 11pc for calving ease direct at +7.6 and top 14pc for milk at +23.
Reiland Angus co-principal Mark Lucas said the bull's top 18pc for birthweight at +2.1 and +104kg for 400-day growth made him a real curve bender.
The equal second top-price bull at $9500, Reiland Waggle W418 was bought by another repeat client, Proudford Ag, Narrawa.
Sired by Reiland Teo T925, the young sire was out of the Erica cow family line.
Also selling for $9500, Reiland Wandoo W284, a March 2025-drop son of Baldridge SR Goalkeeper, was bought by Wynyard Farm, Tumut.
The young sire ranked in the top 2pc for scrotal size at +5, top 3pc for milk at +2.9, top 7pc for eye muscle area at +12.1, and top 20pc for 400-day weight and net feed intake at +106 and -0.07.
Mr Lucas said the result was pleasing with bulls selling north to Merriwa in central NSW and south to Victoria, and two new clients purchasing.
The volume buyer was Elders Gundagai with four bulls at an average of $8500.
