Headline act at Meldon Park heads for stud duties after Rolleston sale

Buyers from two states saw values jump by nearly $2000 compared to the previous year at last Tuesday's annual Meldon Park Simmental Bull Sale at Rolleston Livestock Selling Complex.

Vendors Rod and Lis Skene, Meldon Park stud, Cecil Plains and invited vendors, Navillus Park stud, Obi Obi and KBV stud, Djuan again saw a wide buying audience support the sale both physically and in an online presence on September 23.

A solid start to the sale witnessed the first 30 bulls set an average of $13,667. Another feature was the eight new buyers that were in the mix for the physical product on offer.

There was a buyer preference and premium on polls, which ended with a bottom-line average of $12,102. The horned component of the catalogue ending with an average of $8875.

Vendors saw an expansion of the buyer list with eight new names added to the buyer mailing list.

In all, 65 bulls topped at $30,000 for a 95 per cent clearance at auction to set an average of $11,123.

Topping the draft and the sale was Meldon Park U233 selling to Andrew Moore, Lucrana Simmental studs, Needham Park, Texas.

The 23-month-old weighed 998 kilograms posted muscle scans of 10mm and 7mm, respectively for P8 and rib fat and 146 square centimetres for eye muscle area and an intramuscular fat reading of 5.3 per cent.

Marty Rowlands and Stephen Lean, KBV Stud, Djuan, scored a complete clearance for their trio to set an average of $17,666.

These topped at $23,000 for the 25-month-old KBV Utensil.

Weighing 1050 kilograms, posted muscle scans of 11mm and 8mm, respectively for P8 and rib fat and 155 square centimetres for eye muscle area and an intramuscular fat reading of 6.2 per cent.

The sectional topper was sold to Ian Goodwin and family, Kingston, Alpha.

The other invited vendor was Navillus Park stud, operated by Jason Johnston, Obi Obi.

His three bulls sold to a top of $12,000 to end with an average of $8333.

Their sectional top was a Simbrah entry aged 20-months, scaling 884 kilograms, posting muscle scans of 14mm and 10mm, respectively for P8 and rib fat and 137 square centimetres for eye muscle area and an intramuscular fat reading of 5.6 per cent selling to the Terry family, Lerida, Winton

Headlining for the nurseries supporting the sale were Gareth Laycock's, Biarra Valley stud, Kipper, Esk and the Lucrana prefixes purchasing new genetic material.

Leading the charge for the many commercial producers that ended supported the fixture was the Goodwin family, Kingston, Alpha.

Mr Goodwin returned to take four bulls to average $18,750.

Murray and Loretta Smith, Khyber, Augathella, also returned, taking four for on average $10,000. Barry and Doreen Cooke, Brymaroo secured a trio for a $12,333 average.

The Braitling family, Marie Downs, Springsure picked up a trio costing them on average $10,333.

The Burnett Group, Monteagle, Clermont selected four from the sale at an average $13,750.

The Phillips family, Currawong Pastoral Company, Currawong, Mitchell took a pair for a $10,000 average.

Sam Jerrard and family, Robinson Creek, Taroom, were also among the many who returned seeking genetics, with a single $16,000 purchase.

Lindsay Fielder, Oakvale, Aramac took four for on average $11,500 while the Terry family, Ludgate, Prairie signed off on four for a $11,750 average.

Another four at an average $9250 went to repeat buyers, the Terry family, Lerida, Winton. Winton area producers, Malcolm and Cynthia McQueen, Weston, Winton took four for a $11,250 average.
