Canberra Royal 2025: Saler breed judging results

In a field of three a "showy" female came out on top in the Saler breed judging at the 2025 Royal Canberra show.
Nicolstoke Uma, exhibited by Stephen, Susan and Bevan Nicholas, Nowra Hill, was awarded junior and grand champion female, under the eye of judge Peter Collins, Merridale Angus, Tennyson, Victoria.
The 15-month-old Saler was sired by Murrabah Malcolm and out of Nicolstoke Quinta.
Stephen Nicholas said he liked her growth patterns.
"She has put on a lot of condition in the right places from just being sparingly fed hay as we live on fairly rough country," he said.
"She's got a nice broad rear which is what we like.
"She's nice and thick through the top and we think that with the width of pelvis she's got on her and the structure and size she'll be the type of Saler mum we need to continue into the future with the breed."
Mr Nicholas said this was only her second show outing.
"She's very quiet, a good docile animal, she's easy to handle, easy to work with and just a lovely cow," he said.
Mr Nicholas said they have about 10 Saler breeders and were very pleased to be able to show off the breed at Canberra.
Mr Collins said Nicolstoke Uma was "very showy" with tremendous length of neck and body and paraded very well.
"She has wonderful eye appeal," he said.
Nicolstoke Uma claimed the title over the reserve junior champion female Nicolstoke Viola, also exhibited by the Nicholas family.
The 12-month-old heifer was sired by Nicolstoke Sfour and out of Nicolstoke Lana.
Mr Collins said she had a "beautiful front".
"She is going to make an excellent cow," he said.
