Repeat and new buyers made the most of good value at the 58th annual New England Dorset Fair, held at Guyra on Wednesday.

All up, 55 rams were offered from five studs, with 41 sold for an average $800.

Rams came from studs Yasloc, Glen Innes, Tenterfield High, White Gold, Bukkulla, via Inverell, Bannaweera, Uralla, and Talbragar, Gravesend.

It was the Talbragar stud of Peter Bell that hit the top price, three times, for three of the four rams the stud offered.

They were all bought by first-time Talbragar buyer Dennis Wright, Guyra, at $1000 each.

Talbragar has been offering rams at the Dorset Fair for nearly two decades.

A significant number of rams went to repeat local buyers, highlighting a strong local market. All up there were 12 registered bidders, with many buying in bulk.

P&D Jackson, Ryan's Farm, Langothlin, secured 10 rams at an average of $760, while Schute

Bell and Westbrook Pastoral, Guyra, also made notable purchases, with averages of $800 and $762, respectively.

Another local repeat buyer, Ian Walker, 'Lakemount', Guyra, bought six rams.

The sale was conducted by Colin Say & Company Pty Ltd with Shad Bailey the auctioneer.

Colin Say & Company agent Nathan Purvis said it had been a quality line up of rams and the tight market was a reflection of the large number of ewes that had left the New England region in the past two years.

"There were buyers who bought extra rams because of the good value, quality-wise," he said.
