Talgai Santas

The Talgai enterprise was establish in 2004 after owners Max & Roz Baldwin purchased the Robenlea Santa Gertrudis Stud and property, “Dingyarra” at Toogoolawah. The Talgai Santas prefix and Stud No 1990 came into the Santa Gertrudis industry in 2005 as the Baldwin family owned the Australian Heritage listed homestead ‘Talgai’ near Allora on the Darling Downs. At this time Malcolm & Chick Gadsby joined the Talgai enterprise, and to this day continue to manage the Talgai operation.  The whole stud operation in 2007 moved from “Dingyarra” to the Darling Downs when Max and Roz purchased two other properties in the area. All properties on the Downs have been sold, and moved to the Scenic Rim area.

In March 2018 the company purchased, ‘The Gorge’, and then the neighbouring property, ‘Broadlands’. Both are located in the Nindooinbah area just outside of Beaudesert.  The entire Stud operation is based at ‘The Gorge’ and a commercial herd of 600 Santa/Charolais breeders is run on ‘Broadlands’, where steers and heifers are fattened for the meatworks market or domestic market.

Along with both Stud and Commercial cattle operations, Talgai runs ‘Talgai Prime Hay Suppliers’.  Quality hay is produce from both ‘The Gorge’ and ‘Broadlands’.

Talgai’s breeding objective has been to breed herd improving sires for the commercial cattle producer. The aim is to breed high growth, well muscled, easy finishing cattle to meet the market specifications. Talgai believe that fertility is one of the strongest traits that should be in any herd. Talgai run single sired female herds and maiden heifers are joined at 15 months.

Talgai have sold their bull’s annually at Heartland Santa Gertrudis Sale at Roma, and Brisbane Valley Santa Sale at Toogoolawah, which are both held in September.  In early 2023 they made the decision to cease selling at Heartland after seventeen years, to focus on one sale 'Brisbane Valley'.
