Cooinda Turner T202 son vaults to the top of Talgai Santa Gertrudis sale

A solid result was achieved at the second annual online-only Talgai Santa Gertrudis Production Sale held across September 25-26.

In all, 21 of the 24 lots offered sold for an 88 per cent clearance, averaging $8571.

Breaking this down, 16 of 19 bulls sold to average $9062.50, topping at $15,000, while all five heifers sold to average $7000, topping at $8000 twice.

The average for the bulls was up $395.50 on last year's result, in which all 18 bulls sold to average $8667, topping at $18,000.

Talgai Santa Gertrudis manager Malcolm Gadsby said he was happy with how this year's sale went.

"The online-only sales are working well; we just would have liked to have had a better clearance, but seasonal conditions were tougher this year than last," Mr Gadsby said.

It was the rising two-year-old homozygous polled Cooinda Turner T202 son, Talgai Vault V22, which topped the 2026 sale proceedings.

He was purchased by the Bassingthwaighte family, Yabba Pastoral Co, Kilcoy, with a winning bid of $15,000.

Mr Gadsby said he was one of the sons offered at this year's sale by Cooinda Turner T202, which they purchased from Chris and Elisa Fox, Cooinda Santa Gertrudis, Proston, at their annual sale in 2023 for $13,000.

"Turner T202 has performed very well for us. These were the first two sons of his that we've offered. His half-brother sold for $9000," he said.

"Vault V22 is a good, consistent, stylish sort of bull, with an excellent temperament. He's thick all the way through."

It was not the first time that the Bassingthwaightes had purchased Talgai genetics, having previously sourced Talgai bulls at the Brisbane Valley Santa Gertrudis Sale at Toogoolawah.

Another sire, which featured prominently on the day, was the homozygous polled Talgai Milton. For Milton's final sale, seven of his eight sons sold to average $8571, while his lone daughter in the draft made $7000.

Mr Gadsby said while the majority of the buyer panel had bought Talgai genetics in the past, there were several first-time bidders active on the day.

"Heifers went to new clients in Mackay and Nanango in Qld, and Tregeagle in NSW. Three heifers and three bulls went to stud duties, while the rest were purchased by repeat commercial clients."

Buying was spread out on the day, with all purchasers heading home with no more than one bull or heifer.
