Monto All Breeds saves best for last as vendor tops sale for the first time

Rain ringside couldn't dampen the bidding that stayed hot until the very end at the Monto Annual All Breeds bull sale, held at the Monto saleyards on Saturday, September 12.
Of the 72 bulls at the sale, consisting of 15 breeds offered by 27 vendors, 61 sold to achieve an 85 per cent clearance, a $8032 average, and a $490,000 gross.
Two lots sold post-sale to bring the clearance to 63/72, 88pc, for a $7937 average, and a $500,000 gross.
Offered as the third-last bull of the sale, Remy Martin, a Brahman bull bred by Greg and Barb Lines, My Ee Red Brahmans, South Kolan, Bundaberg, topped the sale when he sold for $16,000 to Kerry and Stewart Wallace, Wallace Cattle Company, Tooloomba Station, Rockhampton, who purchased the bull on behalf of Mr Wallace's sister, Lisa Wallace, Ridgelands, Nebo.
The 27-month-old, 812 kilogram bull, sired by NK Cognac 1817 and out of My Ee Sweet Ivory, recorded 10mm of rump fat, 8mm of rib fat, an eye muscle area of 142 square centimetres, and 5.8pc of intramuscular fat.
Long time vendors at Monto All Breeds, this was the first year the Lines had topped the sale.
Ms Wallace, who also purchased two black Simmental bulls for her and her husband's commercial 4000 head breeder herd based on Tooloomba Station, said she and Mr Wallace only planned on getting bulls for themselves, but couldn't look past Remy Martin for Lisa.
"We just came down looking for some Simmental bulls to put over our black cows, and the red bull was a bonus," she said.
"Stewart's sister, Lisa, has red Brahmans, so she'll utilise that bull.
"She's south of Nebo, on Ridgelands. She's got commercial red Brahmans."
Vendors Barb and Greg Lines said they were very happy with the day's results, and that the two bulls they offered this year both sold to good homes.
"It was really good to see the Brahmans go so well," Ms Lines said.
"We've been selling here for quite a number of years now. It's good - a good social event and you get to meet a lot of people breeding different breeds, so we really enjoy it," Mr Lines added.
The couple said it was a great feeling to top the sale, adding that they believed Remy Martin ticked every box Brahman buyers were looking for.
"If you get in front of him, he's got a nice PP head, a good broad muzzle, his hump's good, he's deep and long, he's very structurally correct, his testicles hang square, he's good from the hip to the pin, right through with a good, Brahman tail on him," Mr Lines said.
"Everything is good about him for a Brahman."
The Lineses wanted to thank the buyers, underbidders, and agents for a successful sale.
"Without them, there'd be no sale," Mr Lines said.
The volume buyer of the sale, the Price family, Aramac, purchased three head for an average of $12,667.
KellCo Rural Agencies livestock agent Andrew Cavanagh said this year's sale saw an improved clearance and average compared to 2025.
"I think it was a really good result. Our clearance rate was pretty good, and the bulls presented as a real value opportunity," he said.
"There was plenty of commentary that the bulls had improved from what was offered in the past, and the bulls that people liked, they got, so it was good to see."
Mr Cavanagh said the bulls sold to both new and return buyers in a pretty typical spread for the All Breeds sale.
"We had bulls go as far north west as Aramac, so it was a good spread on the bulls today," he said.
"We probably did go a bit further afield than we have in the past."
