Guilford Poll Hereford stud, Ouse, Tas, recorded a strong clearance at its 52nd annual on-property bull sale on Friday.

The top-priced bull, Lot 24, Guilford Viewfinder V020, was purchased by Grant and Georgia Monks, Rotherwood Pastoral, Lower Marshes, Tas, for $15,000 at the April 10 sale.

The sale topper was sired by Injemira Robert Redford Q287 and out of Guilford Cora T097, and weighed 772 kilograms.

The April 2024-drop bull recorded Hereford Breedplan figures of +8.9 square centimetres for eye muscle area, a birth weight of +0.4kg, a 200-day weight of +43kg, a 400-day weight of +69kg, and a 600-day weight of +90kg.

The bull also had carcase weight figures of +81kg, intramuscular fat of +1.9pc, milk of +25kg, and a rump fat of +1.6pc.

The Monks had previously purchased bulls at Guilford Poll, but not for a number of years.

Mr Monks said he liked the structure and composition of the couple's new bull, adding that the sale-topper was simply an "all-rounder".

He said the bull will be joined with his heifers in the spring.

Guilford Poll Hereford stud principal Philip Davies, Ouse, said the top-priced bull was a low-birth weight sire with "good length and extra muscle".

"He has an excellent set of EBVs, in the top 1pc for EMA, top 3pc for rump fat and top 8pc for IMF," he said.

"He's a good thick bull with good muscling."

Overall, the stud sold 31 of 37 bulls offered for an average of $7600 and to the top of $15,000.

Mr Davies said he was pleased with Friday's sale, particularly given the two dry years the bulls had been reared through, and the still dry season at Ouse.

Buyers from Tasmania, King Island and Flinders Island were present at the sale, with the majority of the bulls staying local.

The sale's second highest-priced bull, Lot 26, Guilford Valhalla V026, was purchased by Simon Vellekoop, King Island, for $14,000.

The bull was sired by Injemira Robert Redford Q287 and out of Guilford Satin T078, and weighed 726kg.

The April 2024-drop bull recorded Hereford Breedplan EBV figures of +7.7 square centimetres EMA, a birth weight of +2.3kg, a 200-day weight of +48kg, a400-day weight of +73kg and a 600-day weight of +105kg.

The bull also had carcase weight figures of +87kg, and milk of +27kg.

Mr Davies said Lot 26 had good length and thickness, "combined with an excellent data set across the board".

He said the bull's 200-day weight and EMA figures were in the top 3pc for the Hereford breed.

The stud also sold five heifers from the five it offered for an average of $5150 and to a top of $8750, paid for Lot 47, Guilford Miss Bangle W103.
