The Day family's Allendale bull auction followed the broader Angus sale trend, with an improved average and solid clearance.

Alastair, Jayne and Angus Day achieved a $9694 average, $755 up on last year's $8939, with 36 bulls sold from 38 offered.

The highest price bull was $20,000, knocked down to Mark Wilson, Kinyerrie Partnership, Keith.

Mr Wilson is a repeat buyer at Allendale and he said there was plenty to like about the top price bull including its size and doability.

"It's got a great hindquarter and depth of flank, as well as great neck extension," he said.

When selling the top price bull - Allendale Surpass V211 - Spence Dix and Co auctioneer Jono Spence described it as having "skin like a Berkshire', coupled with low birth weight and high growth.

Its EBVs included +3.6 for birth weight, +69 for 200 day weight, +111 for 400 day weight and +131 for 600 day weight

The 21-month-old bull was sired by BJ Surpass and out of Allendale Wigan T204, a dam that went back to Millah Murrah Paratrooper.

All up, Mr Wilson bought three bulls, averaging $17,333.

Also buying near the top of the catalogue was Andrew Johnson, Mount Boothby Pastoral Company, Tintinara, taking three bulls to $15,000, averaging $10,666.

Other South East buyers included Rockalen Pastoral, Willalooka, with three bulls to $14,000, averaging $11,333, Tallageira, Frances, three bulls to $10,000, averaging $9000, and the Smart Group, Keith, four bulls to $13,000, averaging $8750.

Principal Alastair Day said the bulls had come through a pretty tough year.

"The bulls have come out of it well and are ready to go to work," he said.

Mr Day described the auction as a "good, solid sale".

"We appreciate our return buyers very much and we had a lot of repeat buyers," he said.

"I think the bulls that came through the ring presented well, nice and wide, and stood up well."

Mr Spence said the Allendale offered an excellent line-up of bulls that were not over prepared.

"There was a lot of repeat buyers at the sale, plus a couple of new ones," he said.

"Producers focused on high growth and high eye muscle bought bulls at great value."
