The heavens opened just before the start of the Cowley family's Roseleigh Angus sale on Tuesday but it certainly didn't put a dampener on bids.

The Pinnaroo-based stud sold to a top of $28,000 - $15,000 higher than last year's high of $13,000.

Roseleigh had full clearance of 28 bulls and a very healthy $9607 average, $703 up on last year's $8904.

The sale was held at the Gommers family's Eight Mile Sale Complex near Keith, with the area receiving a general 20 millimetre to 25mm drenching on the day.

And the top price bull, which was the opening lot, didn't have far to travel as it was bought by Mandayen Angus and Limousin stud principal Damian Gommers.

It was the first time Mr Gommers had bought from the Roseleigh stud.

The top price bull Roseleigh V5 weighed in at 1025 kilograms at 20 months of age.

Its eye muscle area measured 116 square centimetres, with a scrotal measurement of 45cm. It weighed in at 41kg at birth.

Mr Gommers said he liked V5's volume, depth of body, muscling and head.

"It's a very balanced bull with a lot of volume and softness," he said.

"The figures also stacked up, so it had the data to go with it."

Mr Gommers said another reason he chased V5 was because its sire Millah Murrah Nectar N334 had bred very well.

He said V5 would be going into stud duties at Mandayen.

Other new buyers to Roseleigh were Hugh and Prue McEachern, Injemira, Grassmere, Victoria.

The couple run a commercial operation with between 400 to 500 cows, taking calves through to about 550 kilograms to go into feedlots.

Mr McEachern said he came to Roseleigh chasing structure and shape, taking home four bulls to $11,000.

Roseleigh principal Mat Cowley said it was a great auction result.

"I'm more than happy with how the sale went," he said.

"The bulls presented well and it was great to sell to Mandayen, they breed very good cattle," he said.

Mr Cowley said while he wasn't chasing certain traits with his breeding but he was looking for bone and softness.

"We like softness, frame and easy do-ability," he said.

The sale was conducted by Spence Dix & Co, with Luke Schreiber auctioneering.

Mr Schreiber said it was a very solid auction, with the sale of lot one at $28,000 a highlight.

"Outside of him (lot one), it was just a very good run, selling to mainly repeat buyers who know the bulls will perform for them," he said.

"Some clients produce weaners, others grain-fed yearlings, they do it very well and keep coming back to Roseleigh because they know they're consistent and reliable."

Mr Schreiber said, overall, it was an exciting time to be in the cattle industry.

"The job in the United States is through the roof and that flows through to us," he said.
