Repeat buyers were out in force at the Honeysett family's 39th annual Trynow Merino stud ram sale at Goolma on September 22.

Rams sold to a top of $2300 under the Helmsman auction system, which was a first for the Trynow stud, owned by Bill and Ashley Honeysett and their mother, Jenny.

The top money was paid for Trynow 24525, an 18-month-old ram with a 17.4-micron fibre diameter, which was purchased by long-time client, Gerard Ryan, of Geurie.

As the third generation of his family breeding quality Merinos at Trynow, Bill Honeysett described the top priced ram as having long-stapled, rich bright wool, and very correct with a good lock.

The ram was sired by Tara Park 2134 and recorded a standard deviation of 2.7 micron, coefficient of variation of 15.7 per cent, and 99.8pc comfort factor.

The Honeysetts offered 30 rams aged 12 to 18 months, with 22 selling under the new system, averaging $1384, which was up by $100 on last year's result.

"We will definitely use the Helmsman system again, as it gave clients a better opportunity to see what they're bidding on all at once, and compare notes while the auction is still going," Bill Honeysett said.

"It gives buyers a chance to bid on their second choice if they missed out on the first choice."

One of the volume buyers at the sale was another long-time client, Ross Gardiner of Mebul, who took home four rams to a top of $1600.

Buying Trynow rams for the past ten years, Mr Gardiner said he kept coming back as they "filled the bales".

"They are good all round sheep and the micron is what we like," he said.

Joining 600 Merino ewes, Mr Gardiner said the new Trynow rams would be put to work in late summer/early autumn on his mixed farm.

Other volume buyers were Goolma locals, Gunadoo Pastoral, who put together a draft of five rams to $1600; and Peter Doherty and family, who purchased three rams also for the top price of $1600.

Agent, Brad Wilson, of Nutrien Dubbo, said all the usual buyers were in attendance.

"The wool was good and the average was up by $100 on last year," he said.

The sale was conducted by Nutrien, Dubbo.
