A celebratory atmosphere will be permeating the air at the Rolleston Saleyards on Wednesday, August 27, when the 20th Moongana Santa Gertrudis Bull Sale takes place.

For this platinum anniversary sale, Moongana stud principals Cyril and Denise Gauld, will offer 55 bulls, including 52 polls and three horned bulls, from 12pm.

Mr Gauld said this year's sale draft is a consistent line of young growthy bulls, prepared on oats, including six younger bulls that will be 17-months-old on sale day.

The homozygous polled Moongana Magnitude will be represented by nine sons in lots 1, 2, 4, 9, 10, 11, 12, 25, and 41.

"To date, 28 Magnitude sons have sold to average $20,215," Mr Gauld said.

Another homozygous poll, Brookside Anzac, will be represented by 14 sons in lots 5, 6, 7, 8, 17, 18, 19, 22, 23, 30, 31, 32, 47, and 49.

"A total of 22 Anzac sons have sold to average $20,090."

Mr Gauld said the sale has continued to hold appeal among buyers due to the weight for age, temperament, bone, masculinity, and breed character present in the bulls offered.

"Exceptional scan data confirms the thickness in our bulls. Free delivery is also a drawing point for the sale."

For the 2024 sale, Moongana bulls sold to New South Wales, Western Australia, and in Queensland to as far west as Blackall and Barcaldine, with a large percentage selling to Central Queensland buyers.

"While the first 10 bulls sold to average $20,300 last year, 30 per cent of the draft sold from $6000 to $8000, making it a sale that caters for all budgets."

Moongana Santa Gertrudis Bull Sale 2025

Cyril and Denise Gauld, will offer 55 bulls, including 52 polls and three horned bulls, at the 20th Moongana Santa Gertrudis Bull Sale taking place at the Rolleston Saleyards on Wednesday, August 27, from midday.

MOONGANA BULLS MARVEL SMITHS

Murray and Loretta Smith, their son Lyndon, and his wife Hannah, have followed the Moongana sale from its initial location at Springsure through to Rolleston, having bought more than 20 bulls from the Gaulds across a span of about 10 years.

Lyndon and Hannah Smith breed Santa Gertrudis and Santa Gertrudis-cross on Khyber Station, Augathella, with the resulting progeny sent to his parents property on Bauhinia Downs to be grown out to jap ox weight for MSA grading and entry into the Teys Grasslands program.

Lyndon Smith said the family has utilised Santa Gertrudis for more than 20 years in their tick-free area due to the breed's "temperament, high fertility rate, and great weight for age".

"The pure Santas and Santa/Angus-cross are sold directly to the works through Murray's operation at three-years-old or more and 330kg-plus dressed weight. The Teys works is only a couple of hours away, so we've been sending them there for many years. We've received quite good returns in recent times," Mr Smith said.

He said the Moongana bulls hold appeal as they're "good types" and there is a good choice of bulls with polled genetics available at the sale.

"It's a great venue at Rolleston, and it's a bit of a local sale for Murray. The Moongana bulls suit our environment. They acclimatise to our area quite well and have no trouble settling in. Their progeny go to Murray's to be finished on lucerne and oats. They have great weight-for-age gains there.

"The Gaulds are always good to deal with. They organise delivery of the bulls to Augathella for us post-sale and follow up with us to see how they're performing."

For this year's sale, the Smiths will be looking for a 'type' similar to what they've bought previously: "Great temperament, polled bulls, that show excellent weight for age, that will cross well over the Angus cows".

SALE PARTICULARS

Mr Gauld said conditions have been favourable over the last 12 months.

"The bulls went onto oats on June 12. Before this they were on a buffel and millet crop."

Those who're unable to make the trip to Rolleston for the sale have the option to watch the sale unfold online and make bids via through the Stocklive Elite selling platform.

The bulls drafted for this year's sale are available for inspection at any time via appointment.

Hard copies of the catalogue will be available at the end of July, and all sale information, including photos will be available on the Moongana Santa Gertrudis website.
