Timely falls help to boost spirits on the EP ahead of ram selling season

EPSMBA president Wes Daniell discusses the day and what he thinks is in store for the next 12-18 months.

There were 17 studs on display at the annual Eyre Peninsula Stud Merino Pre-Sale Expo at the Wudinna Showgrounds on Monday.

Timely falls across the region have helped to boost spirits ahead of the ram selling season, which kicks off on the Eyre Peninsula on July 25 with Vin Phelps' Allala sale at Kapinnie.

Eyre Peninsula Stud Merino Breeders Association president Wes Daniell, White River, Minnipa, said the expo was a very well-attended and successful day.

He said recent rainfall had helped lift the seasonal outlook.

"Most parts of the Eyre Peninsula have had quite good rain in the last few weeks, which has helped turn some confidence around," he said.

"It was very dry for a long time before that."

Mr Daniell said the tough times before the recent rainfall meant producers had found it difficult to maintain their breeding ewe numbers.

But with recent falls and strong lamb and mutton prices, the future was looking much brighter.
