Bogo Genetics has a strong reputation for innovative investment in breeding programs that ensure clients achieve productivity and profitability across their sheep and wool operations.

This time last year, Bogo Genetics expanded its offering with the acquisition of the Glenfinnan White Suffolk stud.

Glenfinnan, previously owned by the Hayes family, Young, NSW, has a long-standing history of producing high-quality terminal genetics.

The union of the Merino and terminal studs will allow clients the opportunity to purchase performance genetics suited to multiple sheep enterprises.

Bogo Genetics' general manager Matt Crozier, Cavan Station, Yass, says they have some significant investment plans for the White Suffolk program to build on the amazing work achieved by the Hayes family prior to the purchase.

"A successful lamb operation needs two things - great genetics and best practice management. We intend to be at the forefront of prime lamb genetics and assist clients with management advice," he said.

"We intend to help our clients do both across the White Suffolks and also the Merino flocks to help enhance a better product offered to the market and improve the eating quality that is now demanded by many processors," he said.

He said at the recent Bogo open day in Greenthorpe, NSW, Will Barton, Gundagai Meat Processors (GMP), spoke about how the market was shifting and processors were focused on eating quality.

He spoke about how GMP itself offered a premium of 80 cents per kilogram for lambs that hit their market specs, and it didn't matter if they were crossbred or Merino - eating quality was the key.

Yass-based advisor Phil Graham reiterated this, saying a Merino can do just as well as a prime lamb if you give it the same opportunity and put it on the same top-quality feed.

"It is all about how you feed them. Instead of treating Merinos like the poor cousins, give them the same opportunity and they will deliver a higher return off the same opportunity," Mr Graham said.

Bogo Genetics' stud manager Austin Grace, Springfield, Cootamundra, said the White Suffolk breed complemented what they were doing with the Merino stud, as they were very efficient animals and well-suited to their client base.

"We cater to a large range of operations, and the introduction of a terminal option will not only support our Merino clients looking to join a portion of their flock to a terminal, but also the first-cross producers looking for a high-performance terminal option," Mr Grace said.

Mr Crozier said they had done a lot of work on their Merinos over a long period of time to produce a dual-purpose Merino that was performing well for clients and still delivering profitable outcomes even during a fluctuating wool market.

Mr Grace said it was important for them to keep analysing their genetics and output to ensure their objectives were met, and to produce rams that performed to the best of their ability for quality wool production, growth, and eating quality.

"We are aiming to drive production efficiency gains through our genetics to pass onto our clients across both studs," he said.

"We want to produce sheep that can turn off more lambs, meat and wool per hectare of available feed on offer. For the producer, the White Suffolk over the Merino provides a low birthweight lamb for lambing ease, that also has strong early growth to achieve target market specifications required for over-the-hook contracts."

Mr Grace said Bogo rams were bred for a range of outcomes across Merino and terminal sire groups.

Bogo Genetics offers high-performance rams, backed by data that matches phenotype, in a product that produces high-quality sheep and wool to achieve greater returns for its clients.
