Mr Armstrong said it was an excellent lineup, but the champion was a standout for his wool quality.

"He's got excellent structure, very very good bone," he said.

"He stands nice and square but to me it was the whiteness of his wool, the lock structure in his wool.

"He carries that lock structure right through."

Grand champion August-shorn ewe was awarded to Airlie, Walcha, for Airlie 20028.

The polled ewe came through the fine ring and measured 17.7 micron with 2 micron SD, 11.4pc CV, and 100pc CF.

Mr Gray said it was a difficult class to judge, but her wool quality put her above the rest.

"The whiteness, the brightness, and the purity of the wool," he said.
