Main Event draws a crowd during JB and Baynes Angus bull sale

Lot 8 proved to be the main event during the JB Angus and Baynes Angus online bull sale, held on Friday last week.
Held through AuctionsPlus in a helmsman format, the joint sale between JB Angus, Stewart Range, and Baynes Angus, Keith, saw 16 of 20 bulls sold to a top of $12,000 and average of $5406.
This compared to last year's result, where 19 of 21 bulls sold to a top of $13,500 and averaged $7737.
Knocked down for the $12,000 sale high, J.B. Main Event U62 is a May 2023-drop bull sired by Karoo Main Event M367 and out of J.B. Peace R4.
Weighing in at 862 kilograms, the bull had a scrotal circumference of 41 centimetres, P8 fat of 8 millimetres, rib fat of 5mm and eye muscle are of 95cm squared during its December raw data collection.
The bull was touted as being great for heifers in the sale catalogue and had a calving ease direct TransTasman Angus Cattle Evaluation score (+6.7) in the top 16 per cent for that trait.
It also ranked favourably in gestation length, birthweight and milk traits.
"It was certainly one of the picks for joining heifers and one of the stand outs on his structure," JB Angus principal Jock Hislop said.
Mr Hislop said the buying list was filled with repeat clients and couple of new clients.
Given the backdrop of a tough season in SA leading to lower cow numbers and less bull demand, Mr Hislop thought it was a reasonable result.
"I thought it was a pretty good result because demand is definitely down because we're in a drought and numbers are down," he said.
"The good thing is there's a lot of pointers suggesting there's a lot of upside in price to come.
"I think this is a bit of a balance up year, because the past couple of years stud prices have been high on the back of high cattle prices and very high demand.
"This year, the pendulum has the swung the other way a bit and it's a year when producers can pay a bit less and select the ones they want out of each sale."
Leading the way on the Baynes offering at $5000 was Baynes 23 Square-N-Fair U12 - a September 2023-drop bull sired by Myers Fair-N-Square M39 and out of Stoney Point Yankee Queen R906.
