Northern Hereford breeder wins top open paraders title on show debut

What was initially meant to be a reason to give a fresh heifer a run out in the show ring has turned into grand champion success for a young northern NSW Hereford breeder.

Rising above 76 other competitors in the Alan Dunk Memorial Open Paraders at the 2025 Royal Canberra Show, 20-year-old Emily Taylor, Quipolly, was awarded the top ribbon under judge Michelle Fairall, Harden.

Previously named the champion of the 19 years and over age group, Miss Taylor went up against Angus Johnson, Dubbo, who was the winner of the 13 to 18 years age group and Gus Harrington, Bunnan who was the winner of the under 12 years age group.

Judge Michelle Fairall said Miss Taylor displayed professionalism and a great ability to stand her heifer up when she was pushed off balance.

"Her [Miss Taylor's] animal was always stood up," Miss Fairall said.

"She even made me laugh a little bit when I asked some of the questions about her heifer, so she kept me a bit more engaged."

Miss Taylor said the win was completely unexpected.

"To be honest I was just taking her in so she would be good for Sydney but I didn't expect that," she said.

"This is my first big win with paraders, so this is extra special and the fact this is our first time at Canberra Royal, it makes the eight hour trip worth while."

After starting with her school Calrossy Anglican College, Tamworth in 2017, Miss Taylor has now progressed by running her one Hereford stud, Eclipse Poll Herefords.

"I've just been getting a little bit more involved each year," she said.

"Going to a few more youth shows taking my own cattle here and there."
