Bathurst student takes the double win at the 2025 Royal Canberra Show

One student has risen to the top on not one but two occasions in the youth competitions at the 2025 Canberra Royal Show.

Marcus Wythes Scots All Saints College, Bathurst has done what not many have in the past by being named grand champion parade and now grand champion junior judge, under the eye of over judge Sam Parish, Forbes.

The 16-year-old receives the Jason Sutherland memorial award with the opportunity to attend Tocal Beef Cattle Assessment School held at Tocal College later this year and an invitation to return to the 2026 Royal Canberra Show as an associate judge for the steer classes.

Mr Wythes said he was pumped for the win, with this being his first major ribbon in the section.

"It's good being able to assess other people's cattle, being able to see what others cattle are doing compared to yours," he said.

"You're able to see what ways you can improve your cattle to meet those standards that the people above you are meeting.

"You pick up new tips from the different judges as well."

The youngster was named the champion 15-16 years junior beef cattle judge, while Abigail Tucker, Dubbo, won champion under 12 years age group, Ella Taylor, Dubbo, was awarded champion 12 to 14 year beef junior judge, while Angus Johnson, Dubbo, won the champion 17 to 18 years beef junior judge and Nicola Miller, Dubbo won champion 19 to 25 years beef junior judge.

Over judge, Sam Parish said it was phenomenal to see so many young competitors, especially as events are still building off the back of COVID-19.

"Some of the kids out here and the natural talent of them was great," he said.

"A lot of them haven't had a lot of coaches, we're at the start of the year and I think we'll see them get better throughout the year.

"It's hard for a lot of kids to come and have their first hit out with not much coaching back at home, as a lot of this does happen behind the scenes but I was very impressed with the kids overall.

"I think too the variety of kids coming from everywhere, it's so good to see, the Canberra Royal needs to be commended on what they have put together here as a program."
