Canberra Royal 2025: Simmental breed judging results

A junior bull with performance dominated in the Simmental ring at the 2025 Royal Canberra Show under judge David Bolton, Shepparton, Vic.
Settler Undaunted, exhibited by Settler Simmentals, Bringelly, was named the supreme Simmental exhibit after competing against another 24 exhibits and previously being named junior and grand champion bull earlier in the day.
Sired by Canadian bull Mader Walk The Line and out of Settler Renae, the 18-month-old red bull tipped the scales at 898 kilograms.
Mr Bolton said the young sire was a powerhouse.
"Some are going to say he is too big, but he can move on those feet and legs for the weight that he is," he said.
"We need a few bulls like this and they can be used carefully."
Mr Bolton said he admired the thickness the young bull displayed, while also having phenomenal power.
Richard Wilkinson, Settler Simmentals, said he has been breeding Simmentals for the past 15 years.
"The bull is out of a homebred cow and was her first calf," he said.
"He has been out to Crookwell Show a couple of weeks ago and gone better here and now he's on track for Sydney Royal Show in April.
Mr Wilkinson said it felt good to come back and take the top title out again after previously winning supreme exhibit with Settler Nicky in 2020.
Earlier in the day the supreme exhibit competed against the junior and grand champion female Ausbred Vegas Pearl, exhibited by Shannon Lawlor, Huntington.
The 12-month-old black Simmental heifer by Bonnydale Nukara out of Ausbred Tahitian Pearl, was the third generation to with the grand champion female title for Mr Lawlor.
She won the title this year over the senior champion female VC Soda Cream T035, exhibited by TAFE NSW Richmond College, Richmond.
Mr Bolton said choosing the grand champion female was one of the hardest decisions he had over the two days of breed judging at the show.
"It's no secret I'm a cow man; I love cows, but there is a pretty good heifer", he said.
"I really like the heifer, the soundness, the way she just glides about and that rear end set up.
"It is as good as you could find, the hip to pin, that lovely tail head and then her neck extension."
Mr Lawlor also won reserve junior champion bull with Ausbred Vegemite Kid, while SBS Utah was awarded reserve champion junior female, exhibited by K4 Simmentals, Bunnan.
