Rams with quality carcase attributes were sought after at the Ramm family's BoBar Poll Dorset ram sale today, near Braidwood.

Rain in the local area was welcomed overnight, and the sale reached a top price of $2800 and an average of $1168.

The top-price ram BoBar 286-23 was purchased by repeat buyer of the stud Kevin Williamson, Boro.

The young ram was sired by Springwaters 924-17 and tipped the scales weighing 106 kilograms.

He also recorded and eye muscle area of 38.07 centimetres squared.

Mr Williamson said the ram was the pick of the catalogue.

"I have 20 Dorset ewes and breed rams for my commercial operation," he said.

The return purchaser said he joins the Poll Dorset rams to 1000 first-cross ewes for prime fat lamb production and aims to turn the progeny off as suckers.

This was Mr Williamson's sole purchase.

BoBar stud principal, Jamie Ramm said the ram had always been in the top group of rams and had been chosen to be in the studs show team this year.

The second top-priced ram BoBar 1-23-T was purchased by R and R Laurie, Braidwood for $2600.

The twin-born ram, sired by another Springwaters sire, weighed 120kg and had an eye muscle area of 41.20cm sq, the second highest recorded in the catalogue.

Volume buyers supported the stud with larger drafts of rams destined for Cootamundra, Muttuma, Laggan and Bookham.

WE Ingold Pty Ltd, Muttuma, purchased 10 rams for an average of $800, and Yardize Pty Ltd, Fernleigh, Bookham, bought eight rams for a top of $1600 to an average of $1200.

Cootamundra buyers, Lagoon Creek Ag Pty Ltd, purchased seven rams for a top price of $1200 and an average of $885.

Muttuma purchaser Robert Flint purchased four rams for a top-price of $1400 to average $1300.

Mr Flint said his family had been buying rams from the stud for four generations.

The progeny of his 1200 first-cross ewe operation meeting market specifications when sold to the domestic trade as suckers.

Mr Ramm said the family were happy enough with the sale, with a few large volume buyers not in the market this year.

"It's good to see mostly repeat buyers with a few new faces here," he said.

"We're happy enough with the result with the way the lamb prices have been the last 12 months, the sheep job is now looking good."

Overall 63 of the 100 rams sold to average $1168.

The sale was conducted by Nutrien Ag Solutions and Elders Goulburn, with Ben Seaman taking the bids as auctioneer.
