ABOUT WILLANDRA
Willandra is a family owned business with a long history of success. The original Willandra Merino Stud was established west of Hillston, NSW, in 1886 and was based on Wanganella F. No. 83 and Tasmanian bloodlines believed to be from Belle Vue.
In 1974, the Willandra Stud was purchased by the Wells family and moved to Jerilderie where they have proudly continued the tradition of breeding hardy, well-balanced fertile sheep carrying big fleeces of quality wool. Keeping abreast of current marketing and production trends and continuing to develop and improve the modern Willandra Merino bloodstock is of paramount importance.
Willandra comprises 7,300 HA north-west of Jerilderie, NSW.The stud and property are run by Ross Wells along with his wife Irene, daughter Caroline and grandson Angus Heath with his wife Rachelle.
The stud sheep are managed on a commercial basis across a diverse mix of native dryland, cropping and irrigated country.
Sought after by stud and commercial sheep breeders they are very much a productive dual purpose type, cutting heavy fleeces of 19 – 21 micron medium wool on a large frame.
Ross Wells has always been one to “give it his all” for the Merino industry. He was President for a term and Chief Steward at the local Jerilderie Show for many years.
President of the Riverina Merino Field Days Association and President of NSW Stud Merino Breeders Association.
In 1998 Ross was awarded an O.A.M. (Order of Australia Medal) for service to the Wool Industry.
Ross has had vast experience judging stud sheep throughout Australia, as well as stints in Argentina, South Africa & New Zealand.
With great passion for sheep and wool, Ross understands and continues to work for the betterment of the Wool industry.
