The Wanganella and Poll Boonoke Merino Studs have been at the forefront of the Australian wool industry for in excess of 150 years. AFA appreciates the rich history of the Studs and associated properties and have a strong commercial approach to the business, thereby ensuring its place in Australia’s Merino industry will be preserved and strengthened.

Wanganella
Wanganella sheep are renowned for their ability to produce heavy cutting, long stapled, bright white, soft handling fleeces from large, fertile frames. The famous Wanganella Stud celebrated its 150 year anniversary in 2011. The sheep have been bred to survive and prosper on the treeless old man Riverina Plain. The constitution and conformation of the Wanganella sheep enables them to survive and prosper in most areas of Australia.
Poll Boonoke
Demand for polled Merinos continues to strengthen with the Industry’s focus on dual purpose production. A strong belief in the potential of polled Merinos led Otway Falkiner to establish the Poll Boonoke Stud in 1934. Now 80 years of polled Merino breeding later, the Poll Boonoke sheep remain inherently fertile and early maturing; big framed, plain bodied Merinos growing heavy fleeces of long stapled, soft, medium wool.
Favoured in Queensland for many years, the demand for Poll Merinos is increasing in other areas as streamlined, dual purpose production is demanded by Merino breeders.
