The focus at ALC is breeding adapted, extremely fertile, low cost of production cattle to supply genetics that make a difference to profit margins for commercial cattle producers globally. In total, there has been over 60 years of selection.
ALC Breeding Objectives are as follows:
1. FERTILITY – All breeders wean and rebreed (while lactating) every year. Any female that fails to do so is removed from the herd, no exceptions.
2. TEMPERAMENT – Breed naturally quiet cattle without the need of excessive handling.
3. MUSCLEING – Breed cattle that muscle consistently on any available form of nutrition.
4. SURVIVABILITY – Cows must rear calves with NO assistance. Breed cattle that do well in any given environment at low cost.
5. GROWTH – Produce cattle that grow rapidly with moderate frame size.
(Growth equal’s intake)
6. LOW COST – Breed cattle that work hard for us to produce a profit with minimal inputs.
7. PREDICTABILITY – Have accurate reporting and analysis systems to take out the guess work.
ALC Brahmans is a family-owned and operated stud run by Alf and Louise Collins and their three children. The seedstock herd operates across “Gundaroo Station” near Nebo and “Tondara Station” near Gumlu, with steers grass-fattened at “Brides Creek” near Blackall. All cattle are run entirely on grass, never grain fed, and the herd has not been treated for worms or ticks (except when clearing to tick-free areas).
Sale bulls are presented off-grass at rising two years of age in working condition and sold annually at the on-property “Gundaroo” Nebo Bull Sale. All bulls are semen and morphology tested, sire and dam verified, horn poll tested and fully performance recorded. The catalogue includes four generations of fertility data and Group Breedplan EBVs, with sale bulls typically ranking in the top 5% for Central Production and Live Ex $ Index’s and top 10% for Scrotal Size and Days To Calving EBV’s.
ALC joins 1,700 stud females annually, with all progeny DNA parent verified and recorded through Breedplan, delivering highly accurate EBVs backed by decades of data and genomics. ALC also joins 1,200 commercial females between the Bowen and Blackall properties.
Joining begins in the dry season on October 1 every year regardless. Cows are joined for 10 weeks while lactating; yearlings for 10 weeks and 2-year-old heifers for 6 weeks. All ALC Breeders lactate for 7 to 8 months every year. Females must conceive while lactating, calve unassisted, raise a sound calf and rebreed every year under low-cost management. Non-performers are culled.
