Abernethy Brafords is a family operation run by Malcolm and Sandra Kenny situated in Gayndah in the North Burnett, Queensland. Abernethy, which consists of approximately 4100acres, was originally part of the family holdings of Malcolm’s parents Bryce and Anne Kenny, long standing Braford breeders, with Malcolm and
Sandra purchasing the property in 2005.
With assistance in their spare time from their three adult boys Ben and his wife Jade, Mac and his partner Lucy, Liam and his partner Britney, Abernethy runs around 200-250 replacement heifers and breeders dependent upon seasonality. Ben (an electrician), Mac and Liam (diesel mechanics) are also passionate about the land and take a keen interest in the cattle.
Abernethy’s goal to continue its foundation of breeding commercially focussed, functional cattle continues in the stud selection process with traits such as soundness, quiet temperament and fertility are paramount. We want our cattle to have meat and bone and we strive to improve our herd with new genetics, which has been taken us into registering a Brahman stud. Abernethy has established a small herd of red brahman females and have now got our first IVF calves on the ground.
The Kenny family is looking forward to bringing those genetics into its Braford breeders, which have to be breeding consistently year in year out. If they aren’t, they are culled and turned off as fats. Breeders are the strength of the business.
Abernethy stud bulls sell in September at Rockhampton at the National Braford Sale. Abernethy females are retained for in herd but we have sold commerical heifers at the Wide Bay Braford Elite Heifer Sale in March. Weaners are sold annually at Murgon in June and of course paddock bulls are availabe all year round.
