Wycheproof Saleyards is a livestock selling facility located on Camp Street in Wycheproof, in Victoria's Mallee/Wimmera region, within the Buloke Shire. Nestled at the base of Mount Wycheproof — the world's smallest registered mountain — the saleyards is one of the town's defining landmarks and a cornerstone of the local agricultural economy.
Recognised as the largest store sheep selling centre in rural Victoria, Wycheproof Saleyards handles an annual throughput of around 90,000 to 100,000 head. Regular sales are held monthly, historically on the last Friday of the month, with major agents including Elders conducting auctions that draw buyers from across the state — from Ballarat and Horsham to Pakenham and beyond.
The saleyards is owned and administered by Buloke Shire Council, which manages the precinct on behalf of external livestock agents under a dedicated Saleyards Local Law. In 2021, the facility received significant Federal Government investment through the Building Better Regions Fund, delivering upgrades that strengthened safety for staff and sale attendees while supporting animal welfare standards in line with industry expectations. The site has also served as a testing ground for industry innovation, hosting electronic ID scanner trials run by the Australian Livestock Saleyards Association ahead of mandatory electronic sheep tagging.
Beyond the auction ring, the saleyards carries genuine community significance. Sale-day catering has long been provided by local volunteers, including the Wycheproof Health Service Auxiliary, whose fundraising through the saleyards kiosk supports local health services — a reminder that, like saleyards across rural Australia, Wycheproof's yards are as much a social hub as a commercial one.
Council continues to invest in the saleyards as key infrastructure underpinning the economic backbone of the Buloke Shire, recognising its role in sustaining the region's sheep grazing and broader agricultural industries.
