Regular store and feature cattle sales are held on Fridays at 11am, with cattle received the preceding Thursday until 9pm. Auctions are conducted by local agents including Elders and Landmark, drawing vendors and buyers from across the region and beyond. A companion prime sale for the district runs weekly on Wednesdays at the Southern Livestock Exchange in nearby Mount Compass.
In March 2025, Strathalbyn became EU-accredited, allowing eligible cattle — never treated with hormonal growth promotants and fully traceable through the National Livestock Identification System — to be sold into supply chains bound for European markets. The yards now include dedicated EU ramps and pens to support this accreditation.
Beyond the auction ring, the saleyards is a genuine community gathering point. Its canteen, run by the local Lions Club, serves producers, agents, buyers and transporters on sale days and was recognised in Saleyards Australia's 2026 search for the nation's best saleyard canteen.
Strathalbyn Saleyards sits within the Alexandrina Council area, where livestock selling has long been recognised as one of the district's major industries, reflecting the town's deep agricultural roots dating back to its founding in 1839.
