Record price at national sale rewards Charbray breeding standards: Welsh
A Charbray breed record was set at the 49th National Charbray Sale at Gracemere on September 28, when Wattlebray Vintage climbed to $70,000.
The top price eclipsed the previous $52,500 record set in 2022 when the Wattlebray stable reached top price highs.
Buyers Ethan and Chrissy Horrocks, Belboa, Biloela, were successful in securing the top-priced offering and said they could not fault the poll scurred bull in his application for their breeding operation.
"We have a direction for our breeding program and his weight for age, depth of muscle and overall sire appeal stood out," Mr Horrocks said.
It was a strong sale across the board for Charbray breeders, rewarding a committed focus on consistency and performance.
In total, 89 bulls were sold for a 94 per cent clearance and a $12,393 average.
Charbray Society president Trevor Ford, also of Wattlebray Charbrays, said there was obvious confidence in the direction the breed was heading and buyers were chasing certified Charbray genetics.
"The breeding table has come into its own," he said.
"Pedigrees are now important and good bulls with bone and correct structure are being recognised.
"We had repeat clients - a few who hadn't been for a few years were back today and quite active."
Long-time Charbray breeder and society treasurer, Matt Welsh, Huntington Charbrays, said he was over the moon with the sale result.
"We have some really astute cattle people investing in the breed and it's really starting to show in our sales," he said. "We're getting fussier and fussier about consistency and type and we feel like we're really going somewhere."
