Moongool hits $100k top second year in a row at 2026 Charolais and Simbrah sale

A strong sale result and an impressive top price of $100,000, achieved for the second year in a row, has rounded out an exceptional year for the Price family after the conclusion of their on-property Charolais and Simbrah sale held at Moongool, Yuleba, on Monday, September 21.

At the 2026 sale, 109 of 125 bulls sold ringside, 87 per cent, to average $14,779, and gross $1,610,945.

In a further breakdown, 78 of 88 Charolais bulls sold for an 87pc clearance and a $16,025 average, while 31 of 37 Simbrah bulls sold for an 84pc clearance and an $11,645 average.

Six lots sold post-sale to bring the overall clearance to 115 of 125, 92pc, for a $14,322 average and a $1,647,000 gross, the Charolais result to 83 of 88 sold, 94pc, for a $15,422 average, and the Simbrah result to 32 of 37 sold, 86pc, for an $11,469 average.

It was a slightly softer sale compared to last year's result, where all 119 bulls offered sold for a 100pc clearance, a $19,042 average, a $100,000 top, and a $2,265,998 sale gross.

Hitting the top price result of $100,000 early in the sale, Moongool Mr V850, a 23-month-old polled red factor bull, was purchased by Alan and Natalie Goodland, Clare Charolais, Theodore.

He was sired by Barambah-Dale Salvage, a polled bull, and out of Moongool K309, also polled.

He weighed 1062 kilograms, had P8 and rib fat measurements of 15 and 10 millimetres respectively, an eye muscle area of 154 square centimetres, intramuscular fat of 5.5pc, a scrotal circumference of 44cm and morphology of 81pc.

Long-time buyers of Moongool bulls, the Goodlands said they'd had their eye on their top-priced purchase since they saw him at the Royal Queensland Show in August.

"His body, top-line, muscle, softness, structural correctness, his head, his tail, everything," Mr Goodland said when asked what he liked about the bull.

"Overall, to get the body on a bull like that and the correctness of him is pretty rare, I think.

"We want to breed more red factor, and to get a bull like that, we'd probably be looking for a proper, top, red bull for years."

Based at their home property, Clare, at Theodore, the Goodlands run a Charolais stud, Clare Charolais, and a commercial Charolais/Brahman breeder herd over five properties at Theodore and Wandoan.

"We would join 1000 commercial females [a year]," Mr Goodland said. "We run Charolais bulls and Brahman bulls in the commercial herd."

Planning to use Moongool Mr V850 as a stud sire, the Goodlands said they would retain semen from him and then send him out with their Charolais cows.

The top-priced Simbrah bull of the sale, Moongool V535, sold for $30,000 via AuctionsPlus to Sam Bartlett, Bartlett and Company Livestock and Property, Quilpie.

The 22-month-old, 858kg bull, sired by Mt Arat Quantum and Gowrie Noc098, recorded 9mm of rump fat, 7mm of rib fat, an EMA of 132 sq cm, an IMF of 4.4pc, a scrotal circumference of 44cm and morphology of 82pc.

Bulk buyers at the sale included Westmor Pastoral, Meeleebee Downs, Wallumbilla, who purchased 13 head for an average of $9692, and Bingcliff Pty Ltd, NT, who purchased nine head for an average of $6222.

Moongool stud principal Ivan Price said he was pleased with the sale result, and attributed the reduced clearance to seasonal challenges.

"We had a lot of younger bulls this year, and with the dry weather, as far as a young bull goes, they're probably not ideal to be putting out with the cows in a season that's not going the right way," he said. "But there were a lot of repeat buyers, and it was a very, very solid result."

Of the top-priced bull, Mr Price said he was the standout bull of the sale.

"He's by a first-season sire, and as far as a bull can go into a stud operation, he just ticks all the boxes," he said.

"He finished in the top-line in a strong class at the 2026 Royal Queensland Show, so he was very competitive down there without winning.

"We had a lot of interest in the bull. With his sire presence - I think that's what catches everyone's eye."

Mr Price said the sale result was a great ending to a very successful year for his family and stud.

"It's always good to have a good bull sale and a lot of people put a lot of effort in here," he said.

"It's a real team effort to get a good result and on behalf of the team, it's very satisfying."
