Weona scores three top prices in three years at Roma Brangus sale

A three-way bidding duel over the second bull into the ring for the NSW-based Weona Brangus stud ensured it was the top-selling stud for the third year in a row at the annual Roma Brangus sale, held on September 4.

The bull that the Tannyfoil Brangus stud at Blackwater was successful in purchasing for the top price of $40,000 was Weona 4349, a three-year-old homozygous polled bull weighing 916 kilograms that the stud principals agonised over selling.

"He's what we'd describe as a good Australian bull, very meaty with a very good head," stud representative Lachlan Trustum said.

"There's been a lot of American genetics used in the Brangus world, but we haven't used any.

"If you were looking for a typical Brangus bull, that's what you'd go for."

He was what Tannyfoil's Gavin McKenzie was looking for, to use in the Brangus stud he's operated for about 17 years.

Mr McKenzie said he'd bought a Weona bull some years previously and this was the second time he'd purchased one.

"The one we had before worked for us," he said.

"This one is very thick and deep, with a sirey head - he's like an old-style Brangus with that head.

"We've got a block at Baralaba with stud cows - he's gone there to go straight to work."

His statistics include P8 and rib fat measurements of 15 and 10 millimetres respectively, an eye muscle area of 134 square centimetres, intramuscular fat of 5.1 per cent, a scrotal circumference of 35cm, and semen morphology of 62pc.

Mr Trustum said other central Queensland studs, River Run and Forest Hills, had also been trying to add Weona 4349 to their herds.

"Gavin bought a bull from us a while ago - we're very pleased he bought this one, he's interested in the same things we are, he has the same aims."

Weona, owned by Warren and Robyn Bulmer, their daughter Juanita and her son Lachlan, topped the sale in 2024 after a six-year hiatus with the sale of a herd bull, Weona 4173, for $28,000, and did the same in 2025 with Weona Merve, selling to Taroom's Bonox Brangus stud for $45,000.

In 2025, the sale's average was $10,350 and its overall clearance rate at the fall of hammer was 83 per cent with 67 of 80 lots sold.

This year, 67 of 82 bulls and females, 82pc, were sold for an overall average of $10,127.

Of the 71 bulls offered by 19 studs, 57 were sold, or 80pc, for an average $10,877.

Last year 85pc of the bulls sold for an average of $11,333.

Ten of the 11 heifers offered this year were sold, 91pc, for an average $5850, compared to last year when 10 of 13 females were sold for an average $4750.

A top price of $8000 was paid twice for heifers.

Mullamuddy Winnie, an AI female with PP genetics offered by Greg and Angelique Boyce from Gunnedah, NSW, was sold to the Cann family at Chinchilla, and Bonox B1764, also with PP genes, was sold to to LM Brangus at Middlemount.

The second top bull of the sale was Bonox 1788, offered by the Woodard family of Bonox Brangus at Taroom, which sold for $32,000 to Kyarra Holdings at Mount Charlton, north of Mackay.

Weona sold their show bull, Weona Nevada for $26,000 to Hartley Grazing at Coopermurra, Mitchell. He was the supreme exhibit at the Bonalbo show this year, and part of the winning breeders group in the Brangus ring at the Ekka.

The Hartleys were the sale's main bulk buyers, taking home 10 bulls for an average $12,300.

They were closely followed by Kyarra Holdings, buying seven bulls for an average $18,875.

Lunar Brangus, based at Comet, bought two bulls for $20,000 each, from Henry Sinnamon's Kulkyne stud at Jackson.

Also paying above average for their bulls was Euneeke Grazing at Springsure, successfully buying four bulls for an average $13,250.

Showing the range of interest at the sale, Moorvale Pastoral Co from the Nebo region bought six bulls for an average $11,333 while Shane Jones from Ilfracombe also bought six bulls, for an average of $6333.
