Strong support throughout the north underpins sale for Jarrah Genetics
A program record high price for the Jarrah Reds and a $26,000 Hereford top headlined the Becker family's seventh annual Bred to Perform bull sale at Glenarchy, Banana, on Monday, September 7.
In the Hereford draft, 37 of 40 bulls sold to average $11,730, while for the Jarrah Red and Redfords, 30 of 34 bulls sold to average $10,966.
That saw an overall sale average of $11,388 across the breeds, up almost $2000 on last year's results.
In 2025, there were 73 of 76 bulls sold in the ring to a top of $21,000 for an overall average of $9617, with a further two bulls changing hands immediately after the auction.
The Hereford draft topped at $26,000 for Jarrah Layer V005 (AI) (PP), who was purchased by long-standing supporters Doug and Amanda Burnett, Arcuo Ag, Clermont.
The 24-month-old son of imported New Zealand sire Koanui Layer P028 (IMP NZL) (PP) attracted strong attention on the day, combining phenotype and curve-bending EBVs.
Mr Burnett commented that he was very impressed by the quality and consistency of the Layer sons throughout the draft.
On the Jarrah Red side of the draft the Beckers saw a record top price achieved for the breed, with Jarrah Red V485 (H), selling for $24,000 to long-standing supporters, Penna & Sons, Kangaroo Hills Station, Mt Fox, which is south west of Ingham.
The Penna family secured a total of nine Jarrah Red bulls throughout the day, for an average price of $12,555.
The other volume buyers were Noongar Grazing, Baralaba, who also took home nine bulls across both breeds for an impressive average of $14,000.
The Tarcoola Cattle Co secured five Hereford bulls to average $11,400 for their organic cross-breeding program north of Dingo, while the Powell family, Dysart Farming also secured five Jarrah Red bulls to average $7400.
Repeat buyers underpinned the sale, with bulls selling across Queensland.
Stud principal Sam Becker commented that he was particularly pleased to see a trend toward more bulls pushing into the north across both of the breeds.
"Our program focuses heavily on producing cattle that handle northern conditions - they are bred in tick country and the humidity, and it is great to see that people are recognising this in both the breeds," he said.
"The sale this year was underpinned largely by repeat buyers. It's those people that keep coming back and buying increasing numbers of bulls each year that says to me we are on the right track."
Jarrah runs 450 registered females across its Hereford, Redford and Jarrah Red herds, alongside commercial breeders and a substantial backgrounding and trading operation.
This is based around a buyback scheme, where Mr Becker and his wife Sarah look to purchase as many cattle as they can back from bull clients.
"This program allows us to put a floor in the market for our bull clients, as well as to source cattle that we know will perform for our operation. We see it as a win-win." Mr Becker said.
