Top price paid for Angus bull with 'perfect' feet and legs at Moorunga

A Victorian Angus bull which "ticked all the boxes" has been sold to a NSW stud for a five-figure sum.

Texas Angus, Warialda, NSW, paid the top price of $20,000 for Lot 7, Moorunga Tanker W021, at the Moorunga Angus spring sale at Swanpool.

The stud sold 39 of the 43 bulls it offered for an average of $9077.

Texas stud co-principal Wendy Mayne said she and son Will came to Victoria for the sale, having previously bought a bull at Moorunga.

"We are chasing back-up bulls, so we thought we would call in and have a look," Ms Mayne said.

"He had everything we were looking for.

"He is very slick in the skin, has a good phenotype and some good data to match it.

"We thought he would suit our program."

She said the bull would go over younger cows in the Texas herd.

"He is the style we like for our market up in the north," she said.

"They like them longer and to have the durability to be able to walk out well.

"He is a very good mover and he ticked all those boxes, so we thought he would be ideal for us."

The February 2025-drop bull was by LVVF Tanker 14 and out of Texas Toque R220.

He had estimated breeding value figures of a 4.4 kilograms birth weight, 70kg 200-day weight, 124kg 400-day weight and 155kg 600-day weight.

He had an eye muscle area of 7.5 square centimetres, a rib fat measurement of -1.5 millimetres, rump fat of -1.2mm, retail beef yield of -0.1 per cent and intramuscular fat of 1.5pc.

Moorunga stud manager Glenn Trout said the bull's frame score and docility stood out.

"That bull has more growth for age, his feet and legs are near perfect and his temperament is brilliant," Mr Trout said.

"He's a long, deep, smooth-shouldered youngster with lots of eye appeal and plenty of performance.

"This is the first of our Tanker progeny to sell and we love him.

"He's also out of an outstanding female, who truly has the extra length of spine we look for.

"He'll be in great hands."

He said Texas was one of two studs which bought bulls at the sale, with the other being Standon Rock, Benalla.

Elders stud stock specialist Ryan Bajada, Wagga Wagga, NSW, said there was competition from Gippsland, central NSW and locally.

"It was a pretty good spread," Mr Bajada said.

"The two-year-old and baby bulls endured a pretty tough start, but obviously the season has turned around in the last couple of months.

"I think the cattle presented really, really well."

He said the two-year old bulls had "plenty of shape and power about them".
