Seven bulls share top-price honours at Narranmore's annual Angus bull sale

Repeat commercial support underpinned the Narranmore Angus bull sale at Elong Elong on Friday, August 28.

All up, 31 of 44 bulls sold to a top of $8000 and an average of $6283, with seven bulls sharing the top price.

Andrew and Jacqueline Rindfleish, Wongalea, Mendooran, were among the strongest buyers, securing two of the equal top-priced bulls early on in the sale, for $8000 each.

Their first purchase was Narranmore V287, a September 2024-drop son of RDMG Stockade S21, which weighed 906 kilograms. He recorded an eye muscle area of 114 square centimetres and a 40cm scrotal circumference.

Straight after, they secured Narranmore V191, another 2024-drop bull at $8000. The 930kg son of Narranmore T74 combined length and performance and carried an Angus Breeding Index ($A) of $192 and Angus low-feed cost index ($A-L) of $339.

Auctioneer Angus Stuart, Milling Stuart Dunedoo, singled him out as one of his picks of the draft.

"I thought he could have been one of my picks," Mr Stuart said.

"He's a cracking bull. He's got plenty of spring and he's got lots of length. Length is weight and weight is money."

Michael and Rachael Flynn bought Narranmore V198 also at $8000.

Weighing in at 932kg, with an eye muscle area of 112sqcm and a 42cm scrotal circumference, Mr Flynn described him as a quality bull that he anticipated would prove to be great value for money.

The 904kg Narranmore V177 was purchased by Joe Portelli, AWN Dubbo, at $8000.

"We got him as a cow bull," he said.

"Normally we buy heifer bulls at this sale; but we needed a cow bull this time."

He said the 2026 offering compared favourably with previous Narranmore drafts.

"This year I think there's a really outstanding lot, as good as we've seen," he said.

Mr Portelli said he had been buying from Narranmore since its early sales, including purchasing the top-priced bull at the stud's first sale.

"We bought the top-priced bull at his first sale and every year they're just better, I think," he said.

Mr Portelli said Narranmore bulls had consistently represented value for money and performed in commercial herds.

"The calves always do really well in the yards and, for value for money, they're good quality bulls."

Narranmore V238, Narranmore V184 and Narranmore W15, an April 2025-drop son of RDMG Quake Q8, also all sold for $8000.

The younger bull recorded a direct calving ease EBV of +3.0, gestation length of -7.0 days and birth weight of +4.8kg, with selection indexes of $185 for $A and $334 for $A-L.

Commercial buyers operated throughout the catalogue, with Richardson Sinclair securing three bulls for a western client, while another three bulls headed for Cassilis.

Emma McCormack and Chris Zuidwijk, Woodlands, Mendooran, returned to the Narranmore sale to secure Narranmore W34 for $6000.

It was their second Narranmore purchase, with Ms McCormack saying their previous bull had performed well.

"The other one's done well for us," she said.

"The temperament of these bulls is what encouraged us to come back," she said.

The sale opened against a backdrop of improved seasonal conditions, with Mr Stuart pointing to the change in the district and continuing strength in cattle prices.

"The country looks really good. It's certainly had a good change around and things look really well leading into spring for all of us," he said.

"Let's just hope the cattle market will continue on its merry way, and I can't see it changing too much, especially with the way the season is and where we've seen rain forecast and how it's fallen. I think things look onwards and upwards."

At the conclusion of the sale, Narranmore's Ian O'Leary said the family was pleased with the result and remained focused on producing commercially affordable herd bulls.

"We're very happy," Mr O'Leary said.

"We sort of sit down and set our bar. We don't try to get too high. We just try to get reasonably-priced herd bulls out there so the bulls can do a good job for the local people."

He said the continued backing of local and repeat clients remained particularly important to the family.

"It's nice to see all the locals that keep coming back and support us," he said.

Mr O'Leary also acknowledged the increasing role of the next generation in the Narranmore operation.

"In future years, it's up to the boys to keep it going," he said. "They do 90pc of the work."
