Top bull at 2026 Talbalba Herefords sale goes to previous record breakers
Previous sale record breakers got the top-price bull at the 10th annual Talbalba Herefords sale, where the average price was up by about $2000 on 2025.
More than 100 people packed the stands at the Reid family's property near Millmerran on Thursday, August 27, including many bidders from around the Downs, Maranoa, and into central Queensland.
Fierce bidding started early, with four of the first 10 bulls selling for $20,000 or more, and it continued.
All told, 64 of 69 bulls offered sold through the ring for a 92.7 per cent clearance, a gross of $979,000 and an average price of $15,296.
By comparison, 59 of 70 bulls sold at the 2025 sale for an 84.3pc clearance, a $784,000 gross, an average of $13,288 and a top price of $30,000.

At this Thursday's sale, the Reid family sold Talbalba Stand Alone to Tasmanian Hereford breeders, the McLauchlan family of Valma Poll Hereford Stud, Whitemore, and Cam Clements of the Nova Poll Hereford Stud, West Ridgley, for the top price of $64,000.
He was 23 months old, weighed 826 kilograms, and was in the top one per cent of the breed for eye muscle area.
Talbalba Herefords principal Kate Reid said he was a good example of the traits her family was chasing.
"We've used his sire, Yalgoo Stand Alone, over maiden heifers, and his dam (Talbalba Minerva) is one of our proven breeding cows," Ms Reid said.
"He has plenty of carcase, and that's what we're breeding for at the moment; thick, high-EMA bulls with balanced figures."
Valma Poll Hereford Stud principal Andrew McLauchlan said Talbalba Stand Alone was big enough for the industry, with plenty of length and tremendous carcase.
"We've got young bull calves to put over our maiden heifers," Mr McLauchlan said.
"Our main objective with him is to lift the figures on our older cows - they are beautiful cows, but there's always room to improve.
"We'll get him down here, get him rested, then out in the paddock working, although we will get some semen as well.
"You couldn't fault him; (alongside the) carcase traits, he was structurally very sound, he moves well and has great carriage through the front end."
Mr McLauchlan and Nova Poll Herefords principal Cam Clements set the Talbalba sale record in 2023 when they bought Talbalba Kingswood for $102,000.
The Becker family of Jarrah Genetics at Banana were reported as the underbidders on the top-price bull this year.
Plenty of repeat buyers attended, alongside bidders who were either new to Talbalba or came back for the first time in years, GDL agent Mark Duthie said.
"There's plenty of positivity around Herefords at the moment," he said.
Bulk buyers had a field day, with eight separate bidders buying three or more lots through the ring.
The Hauff family, based at Blackall, bought the largest number of bulls at auction, with five lots for an average price of $13,600.
