Heifer bulls in demand at Wirruna's spring sale as new client picks up top future sire
Heifer bulls were in demand at the Wirruna Poll Hereford spring bull sale, held on Wednesday, August 26.
It was a 100 per cent clearance for the Holbrook stud with all 39 bulls sold to a top price of $22,000 and an average of $13,000.
All five stud females sold to a top of $6750 and average $6100 while two pens of four pregnancy-tested-in-calf heifers each sold for $3625.
The top-priced bull was Wirruna Ved V467, which sold for $22,000 to Boomey Park, Molong.
The two-year-old bull was sired by Wirruna Saint S064 and from Wirruna Last Day M383.
He ranked in the top 1 per cent for 200-day weight with a figure of +56 and carcase weight at +88.
The bull also ranked in the top 2pc for 400-day weight with a figure of +84, top 4pc for 600-day weight at +113 and top 8pc for retail beef yield with a figure of +2.0.
Wirruna stud principal Ian Locke said he was a "well-muscled" bull with good growth traits.
"He was so thick," he said.
First-time buyers Boomey Park picked up six bulls in total for an average of $17,167.
The top-priced female was Wirruna Cora V306, which sold for $6750 to Emigrace Poll Herefords, Macarthur, Victoria.
The two-year-old heifer, by Wirruna Theo T315 and from Wirruna Cora T549, was PTIC to Wirruna Valor V071.
Mr Locke said she had nice colouring, with panda eye pigmentation, which he said the buyers had commented on during their Beef Week open day.
"The females were much stronger than I thought," he said.
Mr Locke was pleased with the sale, with strong support from return buyers as well as some new clients.
"There was a lot of strength through the heifer bulls," he said.
"In the spring sale, it's a reflection of calving time - now is often a bit more challenged in a good season for calving ease and they focus more on the heifer bulls."
Mr Locke said the stud was preparing for is female dispersal sale on October 14-15, with the support from long-term clients evident in the bull sale.
"The relationships we've had for many years, you really felt the gravity of that it's coming to an end and people were very supportive for the years of those relationships," he said.
"And that showed in the strength of the sale."
