Wakefield Charolais deliver proven structure and figures to repeat clients
Repeat buyers from the Northern Rivers to the New England Tablelands drove bidding at Wakefield Charolais, Wollomombi, to near record level with a 100 per cent clearance at their annual sale on Friday, August 14.
The 48 Charolais bulls all sold to average $12,000 and top at $30,000 while all 12 Angus bulls sold to average $7266 and top at $9500.
The even draft of Charolais caught the eye of repeat cattle producers used to good structure with longevity.
Repeat clients Dan and Jenna Lowe, Nulla Nulla on the Upper Macleay, paid the top money for the homozygous poll Wakefield Victorious by the artificial-insemination sire Clarinda Downtown Q32.
Presenting at 738 kilograms at 21 months, his estimated breeding values (EBV) included growth and carcase weight within the top 8 per cent of the breed, while exhibiting breed average for intra muscular fat (IMF).
Buyer Dan Lowe said he liked the bull's slick coat and Charolais attributes and would use him as a terminal sire over Charbray and Santa Gertrudis-cross cows.

As a repeat client for the past eight years, Mr Lowe said the Wakefield sires had "always done what we wanted".
"We have never had a breakdown through structure," he said.
"What you see is what you get. There is no sugar coating these bulls, no trimmed feet. The Frizell family exhibit old school values."
The Lowe family also purchased the red factor poll Wakefield Vigilante by DSK Kind Sorted S22, with top 15pc retail beef yield, for $13,000.
Underbidder on the lead bull was Brock King and his father Robert, Kingsbrae at Stratheden via Kyogle, who came away with two bulls to average $14,000 and top at $18,000 for the poll Wakefield Venerable, 696kg at 22 months, with top 3pc figures for rump and rib fats along with top 6pc for eye muscle area and top 20pc for IMF.
This bull was by the Wakefield stud's new working sire Futurity Trademark T202E, which brings top 1pc breed figures for IMF and eye muscle area.
The King family will use their new bull over Braford cows, with Little Valley blood, selling the weaner calves through the Northern Rivers Livestock Exchange at Casino.
Queensland commercial and stud operation Lawlor Pastoral, Taroom, Qld, bought two bulls to average $19,000 and top at $21,000 for the slick coated poll Wakefield Vibes by DSK Kind Sorted S22, 674kg at 21 months, with top 6pc figures for EMA and top 15pc for RBY.
Volume buyers Banyulla, Booyong via Bangalow, bought four Charolais bulls to average $14,333 and top at $16,000 for Wakefield Venturous by Futurity Trademark T202E, with top 1pc for rump fat and top 2pc for rib fat and IMF. He will be used with first-cross Brahman-Hereford cows.
Long-time client Michael Moorhead, Baryulgil Pastoral, bought three Charolais bulls to average $10,000 and top at $12,000 for Wakefield Vamped, by DSK Kind Sorted S22, with top 4pc for EMA, top 5pc for RBY and top 15pc for scrotal circumference.
Mr Moorhead runs separate Hereford and Brahman herds and has been using Wakefield Charolais bulls as terminal sires for 15 years. The winning combination has consistently delivered champion Charolais infused steers and heifers at the Grafton weaner sales.
The best selling Angus bull, sold under the Helmsman system, was Wakefield Ironhorse V470, 692kg at 23 months with 5pc figures for 200 and 400 days growth and top 25pc figures for Angus Breeder Index. He sold to EC Graham and Co, Armidale.
The sale was hosted by combined agents Donovan Livestock and Property, Ian Weir and Son, George and Fuhrmann and Ramsey and Bulmer. Calling the bids was Innes Fahey.
