Graneta Angus celebrates total clearance, second best ever result at sale
A Bell Angus stud is celebrating its second best result at its on-property bull sale on Thursday, August 13.
Graneta Angus had a total clearance of 63 bulls, which sold to a top of $26,000 and an average of $13,777.
Stud principal Peter Gaffney said he and his parents Jon and Leny were thrilled with the result.
"It was a very strong sale," Mr Gaffney said. "There was more quality at the tail end of the draft than in other years."
In 2025, the equivalent sale had a 100 per cent clearance of 57 bulls, a top price of $23,000 and a sale average of $11,385.
Mr Gaffney said there was strong bidding from buyers from all over Queensland, including Charters Towers, Winton, Bollon and Clermont.
"We also had a lot of local support," he said.
Mr Gaffney said there was also a lot of online interest, with a lot of bids coming from AuctionsPlus.
Wayne and Sue Caldwell, Kameruka Grazing, Ironpot, snapped up the top-priced bull.
Graneta Reebok V186 by Mandayen Reebok R442 and out of Graneta Blackcap Mary R52 presented with growth figures of a +3.7 birthweight and 200-day weight of 57 kilograms, 400-day weight of 117kg and 600-day weight of 145kg.
He had an eye muscle area of 7.5 square centimetres, a rib measurement of 1.8 millimetres and rump fat of 2.9mm.
His retail beef yield was +0.3 per cent and intramuscular fat measured +1.1pc.
First-time buyer Rob Debenham, Lake Mary, picked up four bulls for Debenham Cattle Co.
Mr Debenham said he was impressed with the quality of the bulls on offer.
He picked up two bulls for $24,000, including Lot 2, Graneta Blaster VI62 and Lot 10, Graneta Reebok V217.
Mr Debenham also picked up two other bulls for $18,000 and $16,000.
"We went for those real traditional Angus bulls - short, stocky, long and thick," Mr Debenham said.
"We will be crossing them over pure Brahmans."
Mr Debenham said the bulls on offer were very balanced animals.
"I think I got three of my best bulls just in that purchase," he said.
TopX Roma principal Cyril Close said the result for the sale was outstanding.
"To get a full clearance and an average like that in a very competitive world in the bull market is outstanding," Mr Close said.
"The fact that repeat buyers keep coming back is testament to the calibre of bulls they have each year.
"There is more depth in their bulls each year."
Mr Gaffney said about 90 people attended the sale in-person.
He said the top-selling bull had caught the eye of a number of people in the lead-up to the sale.
"Every time we took clients around the paddock, they always pointed him out," Mr Gaffney said.
He said the bull was very appealing to the eye.
Mr Gaffney said the result exceeded expectations.
"I thought it would be somewhere near last year's average but I didn't think it would be higher," he said.
"It shows there is confidence in the market."
Mr Gaffney said the top price of $26,000 was equal to their best price.
"We're in our 12th year now and in four out of 12 years, we've topped at $26,000," he said.
Four bulls sold for $24,000, five sold to $22,000 and four sold to $20,000.
