Booroomooka bull with 'curve-bending' data sets stud record in centenary sale

Booroomooka Angus recorded a stud record during its centenary sale, held on-property at Bingara on Thursday, August 13.

The stud achieved a top price of $80,000 and an average of $13,057 for 244 bulls sold from 252 offered.

Successful bids sent constitutionally impressive bulls, with their balance of growth and carcase figures, to five states and across the Tasman to New Zealand.

Last year's sale results had a $60,000 top price and average of $13,513.

The bidding under auctioneer Tom Tanner, Davidson Cameron and Co, started with a bang right out of the box, kicking off with $20,000 online and continued unabated to reach the milestone figure.

Booroomooka Veloso V320, by Chiltern Park Picasso P9 from a daughter of Murdeduke Quarterback Q011, came with impressive figures including top 5 per cent for calving ease, top 10pc for growth and carcase weight and top 2pc for intramuscular fat.

Weighing 868 kilograms at two years of age, he presented with a scrotal circumference of 40 centimetres.

New owners Rennylea Angus, Holbrook, and Don Macrae, Bullseye Angus at Molesworth, Vic, will share the super curve-bender with commercial breeder Guy Campbell, Condamine, Qld.

Mr Campbell and his wife Nicole, took out champion and reserve carcase in his division at the Royal Queensland Show's Paddock to Palate competition last week, will retain walking rights to Booroomooka Veloso V320.

All three shareholders will retain semen rights, with the bull sent for collection at Ced Wise AB Services, at Glen Aplin, Qld.

Rennylea Angus have a long association with Booroomooka, and had calves by Rennylea S69 in this years auction.

In his opening remarks, stud principal Sinclair Munro said the first lot of the sale was "hard to beat for his data set anywhere in the breed".

That was followed by Mr Tanner's remarks that the bull had "curve bending figures" and was "the complete package".

Box Moor Angus Bundarra came away with Booroomooka Volgograd V82 by Landfall Signature S1755 for $45,000 with a top 4pc Angus Breeding Index ($A) figure at $274, top 2pc for scrotal size and top 6pc for birthweight.

Bill and Margie Doak, principals of Box Moor Angus, join 900 Angus cows each year, depending on the season.

Their son Brad described the Booroomooka trait as "hardy and good milking with females that perform".

"If they can survive here they can survive anywhere," he said.

"The character of these animals is consistency."

The Doak family also bought a Rennylea S69 son, in Booroomooka Viscount V139, for $28,000 with top 5pc growth and carcase weight figures.

Another son of Chiltern Park Picasso P9, Booroomooka Voss V388, made $45,000 and sold to Forster and Sons, Uralla.

New Zealand stud Grampians Angus, Tekoa Range north of Christchurch, paid $24,000 for a son of Rennylea L519 in Booroomooka Vancouver V535, with top 2pc IMF, top 1pc mature body condition and top 3pc Angus Breeding Index figures.

Grampians Angus stud principal Jono Reid was in the selling barn and glad to be back at Booroomooka, having worked with the Munro family in 2005.

"Our aim is to breed an efficient product," he said, praising Booroomooka for delivering sires that qualified.

"A breeding program that puts the pressure on delivers a good cow."

Representing another end of the climatic spectrum, Hugh Cameron, buying once again for Cameron and Sons at Roma and Charleville, Qld, said his Booroomooka bulls delivered results in hard Mulga country.

The family joins 3000 cows.

Going away with eight lots to average $10,000, he said Booroomooka sires "hang on much better" in that western country.

"They have a good constitution," he said.

On King Island in the Bass Strait, good feet matters a lot and Booroomooka bulls are proving themselves.

Duncan Clemons' Manuka Properties on King Island bought three sires to average $22,000 and top at $28,000 for a son of Landfall Signature S1755 in Booroomooka Signature V327 with top 7pc for $A.

Mr Clemons joins 1200 Angus cows across 2000ha with progeny grown out on rye grass and clover, cocksfoot and lucerne, with processor JBS paying a 40c/kg premium for higher MSA grading.

"I finish steers at two years old, 340kg (carcase weight), and that premium pays three-quarters of our freight costs," he said.
