Having an overflow of heavy cattle moved to extra South West sale pays off

The innovative move to combine heavy store cattle in the normal trade sale at Boyanup last week proved highly successful, with Elders staff and clients alike beaming with the success of the fixture.
Due to the company's store cattle sale last Friday being full, Elders decided on adding the overflow of 400 heavy cattle to the Tuesday market.
It started with some heavy beef steers that attracted strong competition, selling to a top of $2219 per head with 456c/kg the top liveweight price.
Some very good beef heifers, albeit in small numbers, sold to $1960 and 400c/kg.
Many pens were filled with heavy Friesian steers that saw several regular buyers of these struggling to secure cattle, with the top pen taking the price double of $2009 and 334c/kg.
Buckingham Beef, Collie, started proceedings with the first pen of 10 Angus steers weighing 460kg making $1840 at 400c/kg when bought by volume buyer, Greg Jones.
Mark Semini, Semini Enterprises, Treeton, then snapped up the next two pens at $1907 and $1846 at 442c/kg and 452c/kg.

Mr Jones then paid $2112 for seven Angus weighing 507kg after bidding to 416c/kg for these sold by Five Mile Farmers, Dardanup.
Dave Hollins, Ferguson, then sold the top pen of steers for $2219 with the 563kg Angus making 394c/kg.
These were bought for Kookabrook Livestock Trust, Pinjarra, which followed up with the next two steers from DM & J Carter costing $2131 at 404c/kg.
The top of 456c/kg was paid by Semini Enterprises for a line of eight Murray Grey steers weighing 425kg from GS Brown that returned $1938.
Rodney Galati, Brunswick, picked up a couple of early pens, paying $1833 for four Angus from SJ & DE Brown and $1797 for four sold account Black Rock Valley, with both lines making 418c/kg.
Just four pens of beef heifers were offered with the first containing three Angus weighing 490kg, taking the double top of $1960 and 400c/kg for Brenda Lee, when bought by Mr Jones.
He also bought the next top line, four Charolais cross sold from Marc Piantoni, Collie, costing $1890 at 400c/kg.
An excellent run of heavy Friesian steers appealed to buyers with the top of $2009 and 334c/kg paid for six weighing 601kg from NR, ML & JN Gilbert, Busselton, and one of the many lines bought by Simon Green, Balmoral Rural Services.
Three pens from M Giblett, Bridgetown, opened the dairy steers with the first five weighing 595kg selling for $1892 and the next seven making $1758 at 326c/kg, both knocked down to Mr Green.
Regular sellers of heavy Friesians, Dudinallup Pastoral Co, Nannup, sold several pens topping at $1990 at 330c/kg for five weighing 603kg, bought by Mr Green who then paid $1701 for eight sold by Buckingham Beef.
Crendon Irrigation, Donnybrook, was one of the few grazier accounts to secure cattle, paying $1536 at 329c/kgfor 16 weighing 505kg from Buckingham Beef.
Later it added 10 weighing 469kg from 2BLM at 302c/kg to cost $1416.
What the agent said
Elders auctioneer and Donnybrook representative Pearce Watling said it was a good yarding of cattle.
"Beef steers sold in line with recent sales, to a good gallery of buyers," Mr Watling said.
"Beef heifers remained firm to 5c/kg dearer.
"Heavy Friesian steers sold 5-10c/kg dearer, with strong competition from lotfeeders and graziers."
