Buyers were out in force at the Mullengudgery Ram Selection Field Day, held on site at Mullengudgery Station, Nyngan, on Friday, October 3.

With a large group of rams to select from the Moxham family's Mullengudgery Merino stud, buyers secured 144 - 108 polls and 36 horns - with the sale reaching a top of $2200 four times, and an average of $1296.

The remainder of the available rams will be sold via private sale.

Nutrien stud stock agent Greg Seiler said the field day offered buyers a great opportunity to diversify their flock genetics.

"It was typical of our normal ram selection day," he said.

"There were a number of repeat buyers who have had considerable success with the Mullengudgery Merino genetics, over a number of years, and they're back again to top up their ram team, so they can keep on doing with what they're doing.

"There were also a lot of people who aren't repeat clients who came along on the day, interested to check out the offering and maybe looking for smaller numbers."

The heaviest top-priced ram was 4.0601, by PB 612 syndicate, which weighed 101 kilograms with a fibre diameter of 19.9 micron and a comfort factor of 99.2 per cent.

Long-term Mullengudgery client Bill Stalley, Rossmore Station, Bourke, purchased 10 top-grade horn rams.

Returning buyers Wally and Scott Mitchell, Lansdowne, Louth, purchased six top wool-cutting poll rams.

Volume buyers on the day, Arthur and Jack Davies, Culpaulin Station, Wilcannia, invested in 22 poll rams, with second top volume buyers Michael and Declan Hoare, Bel-Air, Nyngan, purchasing 16 poll rams from the top end of the catalogue.

Scott MacMillan selected nine top-grade poll rams on behalf of Terry Dunne, Double Gates, Cobar.

Mullengudgery Merino station manager Manning Doughty said this year's sale saw a steady crowd of buyers throughout the day and strong support and representation from Nutrien agents.

"Most people were looking for good wool cutters with good carcase traits, and people were definitely a lot more buoyant about the future of wool and sheep and lambs in Western NSW and Southern Queensland," he said.

"We've had a decent sheep growing season, and we were pretty happy with how the rams presented on the day.

"They're in good condition with the average micron on the drop being 19.2, so we were happy with that.

"We just really appreciate all our clients who have stuck with Merinos and stuck with us as well."
