Big moves at the AYR Charolais annual bull sale with 22pc lift in average

The Cass family of Mungabunda, Moura, continued their 53-year Charolais breeding legacy with another full clearance and packed grandstands at their 2025 on-property sale on Monday, September 15.
All 139 of the bulls offered cleared to gross $1,838,000 and average $13,223.
Demand was so hot that a bull not catalogued, but penned to accompany a sale bull in the ring, sold for $6000 on the spot with no questions asked.
The average was a whopping 22.2 per cent higher than last year's average of $10,822 that saw 146 out of 146 bull sold for a gross of $1,580,000.
Of the 2025 offering, 108 were full French genetics and eight were red factor bulls.
Top price was achieved at $32,000 for lot 8, AYR Emerton's Ingram, purchased by Chas Nobbs of Nobbs Grazing, Moura.
Ingram, by AYR Isidor's Emerton and out of AYR Nick's Ingrid, weighed 978 kilograms, scanned an eye muscle area of 154 square centimetres, measured 10mm P8 and 8mm rib fat, recorded 6.4pc intramuscular fat, and had a scrotal circumference of 41cm.
Mr Nobbs also secured the second-top-priced bull, lot 44, AYR Emerton's Irven, for $30,000.
He weighed 920kg, scanned an EMA of 157 square centimetres, measured 9mm P8 and 6mm rib fat, recorded 5.4pc IMF, and had a scrotal circumference of 42cm.
Stud principal David Cass said the result exceeded expectations.
"Nothing is ever guaranteed heading into a sale - it all depends who turns up - so to achieve a complete clearance and this level of support is really rewarding," he said.
"This year we sold the first sons of Anorak, and they were well received, which was great to see alongside our proven sires."
Bulk buying and support from repeat buyers helped underpin the result.
Gavin Scott from Yacamunda Investments secured 11 bulls to average $14,800, while Cameron and Jacqui Tickell from Charleville took home 10 bulls to average $8900, and the Fryer family from Prairie purchased 10 bulls to average $14,700.
Jacqui Tickell said they had been impressed with the performance of bulls in previous years and were happy with the results they had seen across their 2500 breeders.
"They'll go back over our Charbray cows," she said.
"It's really great to see a strong line of bulls presented this year."
There was also strong demand from interstate, with eight per cent of the draft heading south to Casino and surrounding parts of New South Wales.
