Interstate buyers drive demand and bolster the average for Kenny's Creek Angus

Strong bidding and full clearance at KennyÔÇÖs Creek bull sale.

Calving ease and carcase traits were in high demand at the Kenny's Creek Angus bull sale, bolstered by decades-long partnerships with repeat buyers.

The sale was held at Hillview, Boorowa, on Thursday, September 3, and recorded a full clearance of 72 bulls.

Demand for sons of key sires Landfall New Ground N90, and Dunoon Prime Minister P758, lifted the average to $12,292.

Kenny's Creek New Ground U137 sold for the top price of $24,000 to Elders Goulburn on behalf of LA Angus, Carrick.

The 944-kilogram bull, by Landfall New Ground N90 and from Kenny's Creek Wilcoola Q402, was in the top one per cent for eye muscle area (EMA) with an estimated breeding value of +15.3.

Sons of Dunoon Prime Minister P758 were in high demand, including Kenny's Creek Prime Minister U410, who sold for $23,000 to Charlie French, Manna Station, Corinella.

Weighing 828kg with a scrotal circumference of 41.5cm, Kenny's Creek Prime Minister U410 was in the top 3pc for rump fat at +4.5, with intramuscular fat in the top 5pc at +5.1.

Mr French also secured the $17,000 Kenny's Creek Prime Minister U108, 872kg, with leg and angle structure in the top 1pc and a gestation length in the top 6pc at -8.4.

Bulls headed north and south across the border, including to Bundella Grazing, Mungallala, Qld, which purchased four bulls for an average $9000.

BP and JM Tuohey, Serpentine, Vic, secured Kenny's Creek Prime Minister U403 for $20,000. By Dunoon Prime Minister P758 and from Kenny's Creek Bara N34, the 918kg bull was in the top 3pc for gestation length at -9.4, the top 13pc for 400-day growth at +109, with rump fat in the top 4pc at +4.2.

Ian Laurie and Mel Cochrane, Riverdale, Braidwood, purchased five bulls for an average $12,800.

"The quality and structure of them was unreal, we'll be putting them out as cow breeders," Mr Laurie said.

"A number of the surplus females have been bought by repeat buyers, buying bulls that have got the right data as well as structure, gives us access to those other people," buying agent Mark Barton, Nutrien Wagga Wagga, added.

"It gives us both options, to either breed ourselves, rather than just the feedlot market or slaughter cattle."

A further five bulls sold to Ross McLean for The Falls Partnership, Neville, for an $11,600 average.

"There are three cow [bulls] and two heifer bulls, we'll just keep the good genetics going," Mr McLean said.

"We've used these genetics for 14 or 15 years."

Cleverdon Agriculture, Nubba, purchased six bulls for an average price of $9500.

Stud principal Sam Burton Taylor described a consistent flow of bids, which defied a tougher season.

"This is the first time we fed our bulls in a lot of years; we had to feed them silage through autumn and winter," he said.

"They've really they've just exploded in these last eight weeks, when they've got a bit of green feed in front of them.

"People are always looking for that moderate birthweight and growth, there's some carcase traits here as well, EMA and intramuscular fat.

"[Prime Minister] has bred really well for us, and he's done amazing things in our commercial herd."

Kevin Miller, Whitty, Lennon and Co, Forbes, conducted the sale with auctioneer Luke Whitty. The sale was interfaced with AuctionsPlus.
