A son of a Canadian sire attracted the top price at the Narranmore Angus bull sale, held at Elong Elong on August 29.

A total of 39 of 48 Angus bulls on offer sold to a top of $11,000 and for an average of $6000.

The top-priced bull was Narranmore U162, which sold for $11,000 to Malcolm Leader, Binnaway.

The two-year-old bull, by Can1612033 Belvin Panic Switch 2'11 and from Avon59 Narranmore N59, weighed 850 kilograms and scanned six millimetres P8 fat, 4mm on the rib, an eye muscle area of 98 square centimetres and 5.9 per cent for intramuscular fat.

Mr Leader said it was the general appearance of the bull that attracted him.

"His stretch - he's a very long young bull," he said.

"I liked his appeal as a heifer bull.

"He had a very nice laid in shoulder and was not too big in the crest which suits me."

Mr Leader said he would be used over heifers in their commercial operation, where they run about 200 Hereford cows and 50 black baldy cows.

"We always use a black bull over our Poll Hereford heifers," he said.

Mr Leader said Poll Hereford steers are targeted to Caroona Feedlot, while black cattle are finished and sold through Dubbo saleyards.

He said they had been buying from Narranmore for many years, both the Angus bulls, as well as Poll Dorset rams to go into their sheep operation, where they run 1400 Merino and crossbred ewes.

"I think they're good value for money cattle," he said.

Christine O'Leary, Narranmore, said there was a lot to like about the top-priced bull.

"He is a very well-balanced bull with a great shape," she said.

"Combined with a very low birthweight, he was a popular bull on the day."

Volume buyers included Hunter Hall Farming, East Tamworth, who purchased three bulls for an average of $7000.

Also purchasing three bulls was Llangollen Pastoral Co, Cassilis, to average $5000, and LD Campbell Pty Ltd, Merriwa, for an average of $4500.

Ms O'Leary said they were very pleased with the sale result with strong support from repeat clients.

The sale was conducted by Milling Stuart, Dunedoo, and AuctionsPlus provided the online interface.
