Second sale a success at Hannevale Australian Whites on the Eyre Peninsula

It was a successful second on-property ram sale for Hannevale Australian Whites, Mangalo, with a full clearance of Australian Whites last week.
The Eyre Peninsula stud were ecstatic with a full clearance of 20 Australian White rams in the main auction, plus a full clearance of five mini auction rams, and another three sold by private selection.
Hannevale principal Rod Hannemann said the stud was only founded in 2022, after seeing an opportunity to become the first registered Australian White breeder on the Eyre Peninsula.
"We based our flock off of Gamadale Australian Whites (Lascelles, Vic)," he said.
"They're currently in the top ten studs in Australia and they're bloodline was Tattykeel-based."
The family had ran a self replacing Merino flock with White Suffolk rams joined to them.
"We've always loved sheep and wanted to try something new," Mr Hannemann said.
"We had a few dry years and droughts where we had to completely destock for two years but I couldn't go without having sheep. We thought the Australian White being a shedding sheep don't require shearing, mulesing or crutching and believed they would be a good option moving forward and there were no registered breeders on the Eyre Peninsula."
The stud started off with 20 stud ewes and has since grown to the point where they mated 150 ewes this year.
"That will allow us to build our stud, our client base, and offer more rams year-on-year.
The 20 rams in the main auction averaged $1115, with the sale high coming at Lot 5 for $1800 to Dean Morgan, Port Lincoln.
The twin-born ram, an August 2024-drop, weighed in at 83 kilograms. It had one of the highest weaning weights in the catalogue at 40.4kg, while it had a fat scan of 3.5 millimetres and eye muscle depth of 34mm.
The result was nice progress on their first sale in 2024, when seven rams sold from the 21 offered, with a couple more sold post sale.
"The day went well beyond our expectations for our second sale," Mr Hannemann said.
"We were quietly confident that we'd done the phone calls, research and work so that there plenty of buyers there for the number of rams available."
The buying gallery was made up of Eyre Peninsula farmers from Ceduna and Wudinna, down to Tumby Bay and Port Lincoln, but the volume buyer - James Wardle - travelled over from Crystal Brook to purchase 11 rams in total.
The sale was conducted by Elders and Nutrien.
