Local buyers step in to show their support for Milong Angus bull sale

A first-time purchaser currently changing the direction of their mixed-farming operation stepped in to secure the top-priced bull at the Milong Angus bull sale, Friday, August 29, near Young.
Originally running an Angus cow herd of 200 breeders alongside a sheep and cropping rotation, the Bribbaree operation, Weeroona Pastoral Company, secured the top-priced bull, Milong Urchin U75, for $9000.
The 24-month-old Sitz Taylor Made 448H son, from a Raff Pershore L169 daughter, Milong Norice N87, ranked in the top 28 per cent for his gestation length estimated breeding value with -5.9.
He also ranked above breed average for his calving ease daughters' value, along with all his growth traits and days to calving value.
The young sire was described in the catalogue as a long and smooth bull who would fill out to be large-framed, adding plenty of scale and depth to a cow herd.
Luke Hall, Weeroona Pastoral Company, said the operation was increasing its cow numbers and they were chasing a larger framed, easy-doing bull to produce future breeders.
"We've never bought bulls off them before and never really been in the position to," he said.
"But knowing William and knowing what he has done over the years, I thought it was time to give it a go."
Mr Hall said the new sire would be joined to some of the operations' mature cows, with the steer portion of the progeny grown out to feeder weights.
Bulls were sold around the local district into Cootamundra, Junee, Tunbalong and Harden, while going as far north as Scone and Jackadgery, as well as into the Monaro at Adaminaby.
Milong stud principal William Day said there was a good number of visitors who attended the sale, taking interest in the program and the bulls.
"The bulls presented well," he said.
Overall, the sale resulted in 25 of 40 bulls sold for a top price of $9000, to an average $6940.
The Helmsman sale was conducted by Nutrien Wagga Wagga, with AuctionsPlus providing the online selling platform.
