Older bulls suitable for heifers attracted the higher prices at the Segenhoe Angus bull sale.

The Aberdeen stud held its sale solely via AuctionsPlus on Friday, August 22, with two full brothers attracting the two highest prices.

All up, 14 of 29 bulls sold to $11,000, averaging $7285, while all five cow and calf units sold to $5500, averaging $4500 and two of five pregnancy-tested in-calf heifers sold at $4000.

The top price $11,000 bull was Segenhoe Command U57, a 884-kilogram, late July 2023-drop by Baldridge Command C036, out of Dunoon Beeac P1240.

He was bought by returning buyer Darryl Johnston, Gloucester, among the two bulls he bought for his farm.

U57 had estimated breeding values in the top 15 per cent with calving ease direct at +7.2, milk at +23 and docility at +33, as well as retail beef yield in the top 5pc of the breed at +1.6. His Angus Breeding Index of $238 was in the top 20pc.

The second-highest price of $10,500 was for a full brother to the top-priced bull.

His EBVs included top 10pc traits of gestation length at -8.0, maternal body condition of +0.47 and retail beef yield of +1.2. In the top 15pc were eye muscle area of +10.1 and an Angus Breeding Index of $245.

This 906kg bull was also bought by Mr Johnston but will be heading to a neighbour.

Segenhoe's Craig Atkinson said the two top price bulls were "very similar" but the top price bull suited Mr Johnston better, with it a well-grown, moderate-framed, thick, heavy-set, quiet bull.

The top-priced cow and calf was three-year-old Segenhoe Panda T57, by Millah Murrah Rembrandt R48PV and out of Murcheduke Panda R261SV.

Panda T57 was flushed as a heifer and was offered PTIC to calve in March and with a heifer calf at-foot, sired by Segenhoe Napa S26.

The cow and calf were selected by first-time buyer Lloyd Chesworth, Tocumwal, in his only purchase.

The sale's volume buyer was Aaron Boon, Delungra, who bought three cow and calf units and the two heifers.

The sale had a mix of yearling and two-year-old bulls, with the higher prices found on the older bulls, a trend Mr Akinson said they had been seeing in recent years.

The sale was conducted on AuctionsPlus and coordinated by Bailey Property and Livestock.
