Kattata Well rams sell well at Eyre Peninsula on-property auction

White Suffolks and Ultra Whites sold to lofty prices at the Kattata Well on-property auction last week, with the sale's clearance up from 2024.
A total of 149 White Suffolks were offered and 19 Ultra Whites, with 115 and 12 sold totalling 127 sold, an increase of 14 from last year, averaging $1213.
Topping the sale for the White Suffolks were Lot 5 and Lot 10, knocked down at $2800 each, while the top Ultra White sold for $3200 at Lot 152.
Eyre Peninsula Livestock auctioneer Ben Dohnt said the sale was a credit to the Hull family.
"The boys have done a terrific job presenting their rams," he said.
"They're in really good condition and they had a better clearance than last year.
"There were lots of regular clients, but also four or five new buyers here which shows how well the boys are doing."
Chad Makin, Makin Nominees, Keith, picked up Lot 5 and said his farmhand Dekoda Standfield had picked the ram out.
"We typically run a Merino flock but run a small selection and our five and a half year old ewes with a terminal sire," he said.
"We've been coming here for about five years and we're certainly seeing some vigour and good structure in our lambs.
"Dekoda really liked that he was short and stocky, but a good yielder and should put a fair bit of meat on our carcases."
Quality Wool agent Damien Johnson said the top rams were standouts.
"They were all structurally sound rams," he said.
"And they had the figures to back up their visual traits."
The ram, sired by Ella Matta 210566, was twin-born, weighed 112 kilograms and had Australian Sheep Breeding Values of 0.3 for birthweight, 11.7 for weaning weight, 17 for post-weaning weight and 147 for terminal carcase production.
Picking up Lot 10 was Rodney Hammat, Woodleigh Hills, Washpool, buying through AuctionsPlus.
Sired by Detpa Grove 220305, the 111kg, twin-born ram has ASBVs of 0.5 for BWT, 13.2 for WWT, 20.3 for PWWT and 155 for TCP.

The top Ultra White ram sold to Mills Farming, Parndana, through AuctionsPlus. It had ASBVs of 9.2 for WWT, 13.2 for PWWT, 0.7 for post-weaning fat and 138 for TCP.
Co-stud principal Leroy Hull said it was a terrific example of an Ultra White ram.
"He's really good on his feet, full of muscle, he's just a keg on legs," he said.
"We loving our early growth and we're looking to improve our eye muscle as well, so those are all things we look for in a great ram.
"We'll keep working at that into the future."
