After returning to the sale ring following a seven-year hiatus, the Costello family of Nairn Park Angus, Walcha, has recorded its highest sale average to-date.

Even with the trying seasonal conditions leading up to the sale, Nairn Park stud co-principal Rob Costello said it was a good start back in the ring for the family, with their sale on August 9.

Two bulls reached the equal top of $16,000 while a total of 32 of the 51 bulls selling for an average of $9000.

The first bull to reach the top money was Nairn Park U51, bought by Bywell Grazing, Walcha.

The 25-month-old Dunoon Recharge R102 son tipped the scales at 796 kilograms - the heaviest in the draft - with an eye muscle area of 112 centimetres squared and a scrotal measurement of 43cm.

He recorded high percentile calving ease traits in the top 20 per cent with a calving ease direct estimated breeding value of +6.5, and a calving ease daughters figure of +6.8, while he was in the top 15pc with a gestation length figure of -7.2.

His fat EBVs also ranked well, placing in the top 20pc for his rib fat figure of +1.2 and in the top 15pc for the P8 fat value of +2.2.

The second bull to reach the equal top price was Nairn Park U46, bought by Nerstane Pastoral, Woolbrook.

Sired by Clunie Range Plantation P392, the 25-month-old bull was out of Nairn Park Usual K92, which had been a "top shelf donor" for the program.

He recorded above-average EBVs for his growth traits, including 200-day, 400-day and 600-day weight figures of +55, +96 and +122, respectively.

He ranked in the top 15pc for his scrotal size figure of +3.5, which reflected in his raw data with a scrotal circumference of 47cm.

The descendant of Miwillah Gatsby G279, on his dam's side, weighed 792kg with an intramuscular fat score of 7.4pc.

The Woolbrook-based operation also took home an additional three bulls for an average $12,000.

Another volume buyer throughout the sale was SN Nivison, Walcha, who secured four bulls for an average $10,500.

Mr Costello said there were a number of new clients, along with loyal clients, who bought bulls, appreciating the sires for their temperament, structure and longevity.

The sale was conducted by Davidson Cameron and Company, Walcha, along with Elders Walcha, with Paul Dooley, Tamworth, as guest auctioneer.
