Simmental showing catches the judge's eye, and 'creates a discussion'

Simmental judge Terry Connor goes through his decision-making process in the judging.

Youth, it has sometimes been said is wasted on the young, but in the case of a 27-month-old Simmental bull, weighing 966 kilograms, its just the start.

This is what RNA Simmental judge, Terry Connor, Rockhampton, saw in in the senior and grand champion bull at the Royal Queensland Show, Silver Linings Underdog, shown by Silver Linings Simmental, Murgon.

Mr Connor said he was looking for strength without coarseness and refinement without being too frail in the ring.

"I love to judge good cattle. When you've got good cattle, it makes my job so easy," he said.

"I'm here to make a judgement, give my opinion and create a discussion with you people on the ringside."

Mr Connor was taken by Underdog's sire appeal, strength of spine and easy moving motion.

"When you get behind him, the depth of flank and convexity of the hindquarter are fantastic. He's just a free-moving bull," he said.

Sired by Woonallee Notice out of Silver Linings Starlet, the bull had a super eye muscle area of 144 square centimetres, with a P8 scan of 11mm and 8mm over the rib.

Underdog was the supreme champion exhibit at Gin Gin, Murgon, and Goomeri shows during the recent circuit, Jessica Beddows, who was on the halter, said.

The reserve senior bull was another from the Silver Linings team, Union Jack, a 918kg sire with 128 square centimetre EMA from the 20 months and under 22m class. It had a P8 of 8mm and 6mm on the rib.

The senior and grand champion cow was GK Tiger Lily, bred and shown by Brooke Iseppi, Dalby, the winner of the cow, 30 months and under 36 months.

Kirrily Johnson-Iseppi, Brooke's mother, said the cow was the supreme exhibit at the Gatton show, just two weeks ago.

"She is a cow with great depth of body and hindquarter with a lovely wedge shape," Mr Connor said.

It was sired by Kwa Western Alliance from Trinity Vale Red Rosette.
