Imported bull leaves his mark in draft at Hillview Angus bull and female sale

Loyal clients showed their support throughout the Hillview Angus bull and female sale, Bungendore, August 6.

Despite the cooler temperatures experienced the week before in the area, purchasers were met with some sunshine on sale day, with the top-priced bull reaching a top of $9000.

Hillview Whiskey E Dry U28, an LD Caplitalist 316 son reached the top of the sale selling to long-time clients Gilmour Station, Lake Bathurst.

Weighing 860 kilograms, the 23-month-old bull ranked highly in his carcase estimated breeding values (EBVs) being in the top 10 per cent for his eye muscle area figure of +10.8, while being in the top 14pc for rump fat with a value of +2.3.

He continued the higher percentile values while being in the top 20pc for retail beef yield with a figure of +0.9, as well as the top 34pc for his rib fat figure of +0.7.

Lex Maas, Gimlour Station said he had been purchasing bulls from the stud for 25 years, now running 280 Angus cows, retaining heifers as breeders, while the steer portion are grown out to feeder weights on crop.

"He walked very freely," he said.

"Although he may have been a bit pampered for the shows, we have bought show bulls off Danny before and they've gone on and done very well for us."

In total, the Lake Bathurst operation purchased five bulls for an average of $6600.

Heifers were equally as sought after, with Hillview Undo U57 reaching the top price for the female draft, being purchased by Dryburgh Angus, Neerim Junction, for $8000.

Sired by one of the studs homebred bulls Hillview Quigley Q18, who had a successful show career and was also a son of the United States sire LD Capitalist 316, the 21-month-old female was scanned six months in calf.

She displayed calving ease qualities throughout her EBVs ranking in the top 8pc for calving ease direct with a figure of +8.2, with being in the top 24pc for calving ease daughter and for birthweight with values of +5.9 and +2.6, respectively.

The volume buyer throughout the catalogue was Honfar Pastoral, Bungendore, who took home two bulls for $6000 each as well as four heifers for an average of $4625.

In the bull portion of the catalogue, 14 of 20 sold to a top price of $9000 to average $6333, while 14 of the 15 heifers sold to at $8000 for and average of $5071.

Four bulls were also sold after the sale.

Hillview stud principal Danny Hill said he appreciated the support of some of the program's loyal clients.

The sale was conducted by Darmody and Rayner Livestock and Property, Bungendore, and Nutrien Goulburn.
